(this is mainly directed at Christians, but it applies to all I suppose) When an unbeliver says "prove to me god exists" the beliver usually says "prove to me he doesn't". How stupid is this? Prove to me that there are no giant purple bunny-mice hybreds hopping around unvisible and mischevious? Yes of course it's a possibilty. But is it really a possibilty to consider? To put your life and mind into?

"Prove to me God exists." "Prove to me he doesn't." "Look at war, famine, world hunger, then look me in the eye and tell me he exists." "Look at a new born baby and tell me he doesn't."
That pretty much sums up my thoughts on the matter. As for the existence of purple bunny-mice hybrids.. I quite like the idea.

I think 13th century philosopher Thomas Aquinas said it best, "To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible."

In a word, morality. Why are we moral beings, and more importantly how do we decide what is the correct moral action to take. Aside from God (and I will not vie for any perticular "religon' here), all there is a jumble of theories that take a stab at telling us what is right and why. Even at that those theories give us a marginal insentive to what is right, at best, and at times will lead us to do things that would be widely tagged as wrong. What theories? Well, the main ones are Plato's "Virtue Ethics" which has the logical stability of swiss cheese. Slightly better is John S Mill's "Utilitarianism" which has one fatal flaw in its foundation. The best, short of the truth, was Kant's "Duty" based theory, but if you ever bother to read his "Grounding..." it is quite obvious that his theory is based totally on the nessisary existance of God. Really, no one can be forced into accepting the existance of God. But then with the true Rene Descartes type folk, I'd have a hard time proving that I exist. There are four main questions that can only be answered to my satisfaction with the existance of God- the questions of meaning, morality, origin, and destination. Finally, we can indeed say that there is no such thing as a logically sound athiest. Why? Because: in order to posit an absolute negation (God does not exist) one would have to have equally absolute and infinite knowlidge. By nessesity, any being that had such knowlidge would be... God. So an athiest is both claiming to be God, and denying his own existance in the same breath, which is, of course, foolishness. Anyone can doubt, but no one can deny.

better reasoning and deeper thought required.9% Voted for by redbrita, justonewish.
"why not beleive in God" that sounds like belief "just in case..." = WEAK REASON. "prove God doesn't exist" = you can't, but neither can we prove giant purple bunny mice don't exist = WEAK REASON. "prove god exists" = can't... THOUGHT rather than PROOF is necessary. why put your life and mind to something that isn't actually proveable? well it makes some people happy, but what's wrong with deeper thinking, keeping an open mind (this does not mean being a christian 'just in case'), and there being no straight answers yet?

thousand years of philosophy for nothing...Voted for by Joao Camilo.
The thing about those moderm people tring to prove God by some tautology is that St.Agostyne himself have already told them to stop. He says that only someone follish and without faith would try to use logic and science to prove God's Existence. But there is some people who live a hundred years but seem to fall back in the oldest mistakes... One is a about moral...God, the Bible are just not the oldest and not the only moral code existent. They are prior to formation to any society and prior to religion organizations, not the other way around. And If you read the bible or know the story of the religions that use those book as source you will see that they are as fragile as you claim Plato to be; after all it is contraditory (God goes from a divine punisher, killing everyone, even inocent to a big love and peace dude)and just cheek out the 4757 different religions born from different interpretations of the book. In the end, good fiction like Homer.

Why not?Voted for by justonewish.
Why not believe in God? There is a possibility, as you said. Going by Christian beliefs, if one believes in God then one will have everlasting life in Heaven. There's a reason to believe. Some think that God can perform certain actions which we request him to do - the concept of prayer. Now, what would be the benefit of believing in giant purple bunny-mice? I don't think there are any benefits.. other than it'd make who ever discovered proof of them first would be extremely famous. There are many benefits to being a Christian (along with any other religion, really), you've just got to start with believing in God before you can believe in the benefits.

Okay, I'll prove that God exists for you. Since you've opened God as being a possibility by means of your anaolgy of the 'purple bunny-mice hybrids' you have concluded that God does indeed exist. You see, when speaking of God, you must be speaking of the greatest conceivable being. That includes a necessary being. Which means that if God even has a possibility of existing, His existence must be for it is necessary. I don't know if you understand this argument, but it is a very popular one. And, being a Christian, the reason we often ask people to prove that God does not exist is because you people are the new kids on the block. From as far back as history is recorded, there have been revelations of the divine. Yet suddenly, people ask some questions and come to the conclusion that God does not exist. It is only fair that you tell us first. And as of yet, I know of only one valid argument that shows that God cannot exist, but even it is flawed severly.

Im not answering this question but instead, telling you what I think. I find I hold people in higher esteem if they do believe in a higher power because its too easy to say it doesnt exist. It would be impossible to prove that their is a god because the whole idea is unimaginable. Therefore, the ones who see only the concrete dont believe.

They spend their whole lives refuting something that they don't think exist. If I dont believe in oxygen, I wouldn't spend my life proving to the world that I dont believe in oxygen. Why is the existence of God bothering you so much? Is it because it minimises your wisdom? Hey, the truth is, even if the whole world refuses to believe in God, that wont stop him from being God. Just get over it!

Does it really matter anyway?Voted for by Barb Davidson.
I really can't see what all the fuss is about, if someone believes in God then for them he,she,it exists. Believing doesn't make you a better or a lesser person, it just signifies a person who has a need for a reason for being. I firmly believe God's were created purely to answer the question 'Why'the trouble is we now ask bigger questions and simple answers aren't big enough.
I'll just plod along being a non believer, if i'm wrong at the last minute then 'what the hell' but what i really can't stand are evangalists who impose their beliefs as the truth, their truth yes, but not mine!
