Why are there special scholarships for African Americans, special clubs, special months...etc. How come if you had something like that for just white people it would be called racist?
I'm just wondering what people think about this. (I know I spelled special wrong didn't I?)

If you want equality everyone should have equal opportunity. Special scholarships and programs should not exist for any gender or race, we should all get an equal chance and nobody should get unfair advantages.

Creating special programs and funds for the disenfranchised is a natural positive thing to do in a functioning society. Giving a hand to the systematically advantaged is just plain uninspiring. Social placement regardless of cause is the issue not race.

Insulting7% Voted for by Poetic Variable, Eye-Beam, Piscean Wisdom, Enma Ai.
I find it insulting that minorities, black people more commonly, are put on a pedestal seperate from the majority and then they recieve special scholarships that are on a lower standard than the majority. It's like saying that minorities need a handicap to be equal to the majority of people.

It is complicated!5% Voted for by piazza cavour, superior, Enma Ai.
Yes, it's not fair that minorities get special treatment. However, in the past minorities were discriminated against, so the government wants them to feel like they're making it up to them. I believe that people should be judged by what's in their brain, and not by ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or what have you. Minority or not, everyone should be able to have special things celebrating their ethnicity, but no one should be allowed to discriminate against or exclude others. Naturally this is a thin line, so people have to be careful and tolerant.

Whites always had...5% Voted for by Poetryality, piazza cavour, puddle of worms.
Whites always had, it's time for everyone to have, don't you think? It's only been 40 years or so since Blacks had rights in this country. I mean we could not vote until 1965. Believe it or not, Blacks still have trouble getting into some places in America, and this is 2005. Go figure! Again I say, whites always had in America, always...

They've done a good job of making us feel guilty about the color of our skin.5% Voted for by Netanya Shull, webdemon666, NeferMaatNetjer.
Why? The black coccus has made white people feel guilty about our skin color. Jessie Jackson Al Sharpton and the late Lewis farrakhan tell white people and blacks both that blacks have no opportunity to better themselves and it is all the man's fault. whites and Jews are keeping them down. It's shoved down our throats every day and in every medium. the sad truth is that "The man" is actually the black coccus. Using guilt and fear to keep the black man in the ghetto and the white man fearful of saying anything that remotely sounds bias, for fear that he will be paraded around the news and dubbed a racist. Martin Luther King preached EQUALITY for ALL races. Why would a race that has been fighting for equality and attain it turn around and fight for more rights than all other races. We in this country have been brainwashed in to buying into this politically correct bullshit. And all the while the democratic blacks who are duped into believing that there is no hope to better themselves or live the dream because of the color of their skin. The black leaders in this country get rich off of the misery of their brothers and sisters. Pathetic isn't it?

Prejudices...5% Voted for by Drabarno Ruv, Eye-Beam, Enma Ai.
I don't believe in affirmaitive action or giving special grants and scolarships to people of a racial minority. I am Romany, gypsie to the lamen, I am also wiccan. I have delt with more prejudice than any black/hispanic/asian/woman I know. I however cannot recieve any special grant or scolarship, I am grouped with all the whites. My grandparents came from europe, where my people are still persecuted on a regular basis. I wonder how much better we are over here. Whites are trying to make up for past misdoings to 'minorities' but in doing so they are making things worse. If we could all just get along and forget differences it would be a better place, but that will never happen. I would like to see a scolarship for whites only!! No, because that's racism. We need to stop disciminating to make up for past disrimination.

it's not fair3% Voted for by jonesz12, Enma Ai.
Yeah, why, I think it is ridiculous that in my Christian University, where I am studying to be a minister, anybody who is a minority/person of color gets TWICE as much scholarship money as me. That to me is just plain stupid. I'm studying to serve the church and they just have to be born to what the government perceives as a less fortunate situation. Even though my family is probably just as poor if not poorer than any of them (we're farmers). I just hate the whole idea of a scholarship based on race.

did you hear about THIS?3% Voted for by NeferMaatNetjer, Enma Ai.
there is a movement in the Black community to get White people to...get this...PAY REPARATIONS FOR THE SLAVE TRADE. That's Right! descendants of slaves want money for what our ancestors did to their ancestors. Never mind the fact that not a single one of these people has ever had to do any unpaid labor in their lifetimes. Not one of them has ever been whipped, or had their children sold off. It doesnt matter..THEY want the money for what their ancestors had to endure.
In a way, I hope they get it, I really do! That would set a legal precident! That would mean that I could sue the Italian government for enslaving MY people during the Roman Empire, and with two thousand years of interest, no less!

Hhhummm3% Voted for by Energizer Bunny, Scrap.
I agree with Happy420 up to a certain point. I believe we, as a people, must be willing to help the less fortunate. I realize the ideal situation is where all soical classes are on an equal playing field but realistically, that will never happen. So, I agree with Happy420's response on social class, but the problem is people are more concerned with things like social class, gender, and etc.. than they are about race. All one has to do is look around casually to see people's actions, not their words. I will say that things like "Miss Black America" and other organizations like that have nothing to do with "social placement regardless of cause". Social placement should be about bringing one social class up to the standards of other social classes. In these particular situations, race should not have no bearing at all for there are major social indifferences among all the races. In the "Miss Black America" example social class is not being promoted at all, ONLY RACE. In this respect CitrusSweetie is correct. So, there are good points to be made for both sides of this coin. This goes much further than just whites and blacks for this happens with all races. I believe social and racial issues are woven together to form the fabric of life. In most situations I do not believe it is practical to attempt to separate the two.

pointless to analyze, it's already out of hand.3% Voted for by Fictional-Being, Enma Ai.
because the government still feels guilty over things that happened years ago. i feel it is not okay at all, because it contradicts itself, and contradicts entirely what the black civil rights leaders asked for years ago, which is to be Equal. how is equal having more possibilities than any and every other race? and if a white person draws attention to things like this, it is automatically wrong, it is 'racist', even though the scholarships and the month are openly racist. the thing is, white people and black people are supposed to live dwelling in the past, regretting things their great great great grandfather may have thought at one time, or suddenly remembering the exact number of years their great great great grandmother was enslaved. and for this, these things were made to shut everyone (and when i say everyone, i mean no one) up.

Blank Faces, and No CrutchesVoted for by VitreousSoul.
Look im not a raceist by any stretch of the imagination so please don't think that or take offense to my fallowing statements. Everyone one says it's ok for blacks or other minorities to have the benifits because they have had a 'Hard life' or 'Have had crule things done to them in the past' but you must understand that that was the past and yes Ill admit socity as a whole has been rather unfair and whites may be getting what they deserve but at the same time, everyone preeches for equality. How can equality come from ideals brought about by once again setting racial diffrences. Im sorry I may be wrong but I am still a firm believer in 'Blank Faces', meaning you race dose'nt effect your standings, how well you do in performance is all that is seen. Basically all Im saying is there should be no special treatments for a past that 90% of the people who are rasing hell about it never experienced it. If you wnat the schollarship then by all means get it bt not by your race but by your grades. If you are another hard working person you should have no reason to have a crutch based on your race, all that says is you know you have a free ticket and your willing to explot it no matter who it hurts. Yet at the same time you could prove to be a stronger person cause you know you have the crutch but you still fought hard and earned everything you have on your own.

I believe to say that you allow all men to be created equal in America you are simply lying. Until I can not pay taxes (like immigrants), or get into schools cheaper (like minorities), don't tell me about equality.November 28, 2005

BLOODY RUBBISH
Okay, this post REALLY pisses me off and I'm white. It shows me there are some ignorant @$$ people in here. WHERE IS YOUR REASON!?!?!?!?! Why do we help ANYONE or provide ANY social programs? Why don't we just toss retarded babies in the trash or give junkies more drugs? How about when you're old and decrepit, I come over to your house every day, humiliate you by knocking you out of your wheelchair, and take your social security checks? These scholarships and programs and sponsored by African American groups that only want to increase the opportunities for the underprivileged. Mark my words, it's because of people like the ones that posted this question in the first place that ignorance like this exists. SHAME ON YOU for taking what YOU have for granted. I thank god for the opportunities that I have that my parents did not growing up in bloody Communist Russia. Instead of praising people banding together to help each other you are condemning them for not including you. This is truly pathetic and I'm ashamed to even dignify you people with a response. Please register or login to comment! It's totally free
