If science is correct, and everything is made up of simply energy and matter, then what is it about the energy and matter that makes up me (or anybody else) that makes me alive?

Living is what you are doing right now. You are leading a human life. This is the definition of living. Life can be explained, because, as we all know, science is simply the measurements of things and the math worked out from them using logic. This world is governed by laws, and therefore how we function can be explained. Because we can be explained doesn't mean we are any less alive than we were when we couldn't explain why we functioned. Presently the "soul" organ has yet to be identified, but I do believe I've heard that there is a gland that we don't really know the purpose for, and there is the fact that we know very little about our world and what makes it. You cannot say exactly what life is, because the only answer I or anyone else can give you at this time is that you're living it right now.

I think when science says that everything is made up of matter or energy, it is not wrong. But what makes me alive - the spirit in me, is an energy that science does not understand and neither do we. If this energy wasn't there then when a person died because of a heart attack, all the matter and food energy would be there and so the person would not die, but he does. So, the spiritual energy is something that probably has to do with God and our being alive.

What makes you alive is a load of electrical signals and chemical reactions thats it simple! Life is purely a fluke and there is nothing to differenciate us from any other forces of nature.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. All that makes you 'alive' is the fact you can die.

Life is about existence and nothing more. A species exists simply because it has survived to pass on it's genes. We have evolved to WANT to exist because if we didn't then we would not exist. It wouldn't make sense to evolve to not exist - there is no genetic material to pass on. The fight for survival (humans included) does not have any higer purpose or meaning - the ones that exist are the ones that fight to exist.

You are saying "If"... There are atoms in everything, simple energy..., simple matter..., The number 1 is simple, but then you take 1 plus 1 and get 2. 2 is more complex. We can argue many theories and gods and philosophies about life, but what matters is that each person finds in their own heart what they really believe, and are content with the way feel. How can one person say they are truly right and know the answer to life and that you are wrong with all the many possibilities that make sense. Maybe the better question would be "what is life to me?"
