America doesn't havwe true freedom. Sure, the people here have more rights than some other countries. I get that. But that doesn't change the fact that we don't have real freedom. If we did than we would have the choice to have abortions, for gays to marry, etc.
Some of you may say something like "Without some of the laws like no murdering help run America." Well, you would be right. BUT we can murder if we want. We have the choice too. We just get punishment for doing it. Though with somethings we don't even have a choice.

Freedom is the state of being in which an individual can do anything as long as it does not infringe on the freedom of another.

Is a man sitting in a cubicle reading about freedom on a philosophy forum wishing he could be elsewhere on this beutiful summer day, but cant leave his cubicle for the fear of his boss enjoying more freedom than an old farmer in the middle east without a place in the world he'll rather be than his run down home with his wife?

Your question is flawedVoted for by seanbrowning.
Freedom is not granted from your ruling body, its achieved in your own self, and part of that is whether or not you are willing to accept the consequences of it, good and bad. You don't HAVE to pay taxes, but you won't be living in this country for very long, atleast not without going behind bars. You can do what you want, but be willing to accept consequences for your actions.
Also, your definition of freedom is not really freedom is it? You limit actions and therefore limit freedom, which is an oxymoron. Limited freedom is as good as no freedom, since freedom is the act of doing anything and everything you choose to do.
So are you free? I personally am not because I dont want to accept the consequences. But you could be.

No. Which is in some ways good and bad. I wouldn't want people going around killing each other (that is more than they already are doing now) as if they were free to do so. Yet I also find it utterly stupid that the Patriotic Act allows the government to send FBI agents searching people's homes without their permission because they're suspected of being a terrorist. I mean, you don't even have the freedom to open the door to them yourself. They just crash in. But anyway. Extremist crap. I live in Canada, so what do I know about America?

Nobody has "true" freedom...nor is it good that they should. All countries have laws that restrict behavior. If they didn't, it would be perfectly acceptable for some dirtbag to steal that brand new car you saved up your money for, and if someone found you attractive, they would have every right to force you to have sex with them. Society as a whole gives up some freedoms for safety's sake, it' called having a law.Voted for by NeferMaatNetjer.
I will say that America has much more lenient laws than a lot of other countries. This is both good and bad in some ways. on the one hand, we have no laws restricting religion, for example. we allow the private ownership of guns, and we don't arrest people for extra-marital sex.
on the other hand. we are too lax in punishing those who do break the law, and have a lot of repeat offenders.

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty or safety" Ben FranklinDecember 16, 2006
I Agree
America is not free, and another thing, people like Eminem get sued for the words they say or the lyrics they write. I mean whatever happend to Freedom of Speech. This is such a joke, listening to my History teacher talk on and on about how America is a free country and how it is so special and great to live here. But I cannot wait to personally give a message to Bush, yelling at him to change this country, because his place needs to improve a ton!!!Xelgaroth

It's rather hilarious how retarded the comment about how "you can't wait to give a message to bush, yelling at him to change this country." because in fact, the president has very little power to "change" the country. Congress and the courts have far more power. You want the country to change? Then goddammit, change it yourself! That's the whole idea of freedom! That you don't need to depend on the government.
