if religious, should you have pure faith in the truth of the bible? is it to be followed exactly to the letter? or is it to be followed within reason? in other words, if you are religious, or even not, should the bible be taken literally? i just want to see how many people are of each opinion.

Not exactly the religious type, either, but I don't [always] harrass others for their unwavering loyalty to the Bible. But by no means should it be followed strictly due to, as previously noted, the age of the text, meaning even though they should be, each and every copy of the Bible printed to date is not the original and does not contain what the original preached. It has been amended so many times over the years to match everyone and their cousin's agenda that it simply can not be taken word for word.

The Bible is for Poor PeopleThe Bible serves poor people. People who cannot reason. People who are illerate. People who live in fear. People who want comfort from life's mysteries. These 'poor' people can be excused because their ability to think was robbed from them. They are excuseable.Voted for by Brew Kline.
The minute I learn someone is into the Bible, I go 180 degrees in the opposite direction. I get strange people handing me bibles all the time. I keep my distance from them crazy folk. -
im not religious so...Voted for by ShockinglyCute.
personally, i'm not religious, and im not against the bible. it has good points in it, but i honestly dont believe or agree with EVERYTHING in it. and i dont understand how so many people can think of following a book written hundreds of years ago to the letter. i mean, it practically makes women out to be evil, and yet people are still basing so much of their lives on it. how can people put so much faith in one book?

Live in the timesVoted for by Gosh I Love You.
The bible is becoming evil. Gays are being 'sent to hell' and so many people don't understand that this book was written a LONG LONG time ago and the times have changed, now. I have read the whole bible, and it says that fathers can sell their daughters into slavery. Should this be allowed? Should this be as followed as the gays going into hell deal? I think that religious people need to keep their comments about hell and God to theirselves. Even the most religious people look silly following all of the 'rules' and 'guide lines' of the bible. With reason, I believe the bible should be followed, as long as it makes sense in today's world, it's not 200 B.C. anymore.

Many LevelsThe Bible is like a jigsaw puzzle. You need the pieces in the right order to see the correct picture. I think that another way of asking your question would be, can you believe what the Bible says? I study the Bible (nowhere near as much as I should), and I believe it. There are many levels to understanding the Bible. There is a duality that runs throughout it. Physical and spiritual. You can acquire the basic knowledge to understand it, but if you won't believe it, it won't be real to you. You can take literally any truth that you have proven. When you prove it to yourself, you can have the faith to believe. Faith, as defined in the Bible is, "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Once you have what you want, you don't need to have faith in it because you already have it. So in the Biblical application, especially in regards to God's promises, we have the faith that He will give us those things that He has promised because we have not seen them yet.Voted for by mudgod.

YES, VERY LITERALYes we do have original tabletsVoted for by frndofyaweh.
Some are 4000 years old and they do match up with what we have today, provided you take the languages grammatics into account. We have Bible scholars who do that as well.
Yes, I can take my entire Bible literally and it claims to be a timeless book, never getting old or outdated.
If you have read it through, then you know this is not only true, it is still valid and logical and can solve any problem we have as individuals or a whole society.
For example: The Bible condones slavery. Is this outdated?
No, it is not outdated, just mis-interpreted by the Latin limitations on grammer at that time. It's the languages you have to look at here, to get the meaning of slavery.
Slavery in the Bible means; valets and maids and butlers. The Bible instructs those who keep slaves to pay them a wage, treat them like a family member and let them go free, after seven years of service and training to become independent. This was designed to educate them and make them into a viable equal in their society. It is humans who twisted the value of slavery every time, into something it never was meant to be like.
WHY GOD CHOSE THIS LAW OF SLAVES: it made wonderful logical sense! If you're enemy attacked you and you defended yourself and won the battle and also took prisoners. You couldn't just let them free. You could accept them as your brother and then let them join you in your camp, city, etc.
This required education and integration. If you just said hey cool now go off in our city and blend in adapt and all. The prisoners would simply become lost criminals.
God says take them into your household as slaves and educate them. Pay them an equal wage, as a freeman and not a bondsman. Teach them to save money, worship, take part in day to day life. Then when all is done in seven years set them free into your city as an equal.
NOW: think about all of those prisoners simply rotting away at Guantanimo Bay Cuba? We can't let them go any time and do not know what to do with them. EDUCATE them! Love them and prepare them to become a part of thir own country again! God gave the answer to this and our USA Government hasn't heeded this council.
THIS MEANS!!!!! According to Gods own Words; that after seven years of holding them, Iraq has Gods support to attack US and get them back! what then?
As per what God says; The Word of God has the perfect answer and there is nothing new under sun.
