Is God just a comfort?

Is the idea of God just something that is made up to make people more comfortable with life and death and stuff?

  • Yes and No

Is the idea of God a comfort? Absolutely. But is that all it/he/whatever is? I think to say yes again would be a massive over-simplification and, in my experience, is merely an excuse to avoid the real question. Which is: Is it reasonable to assume God exists and what would that require of me?

  • God as comfort only

The idea of God is comforting in the sense that there is a power more powerful than me that can help me in times of need. But if God was just that, then no one would actually seek God because it would be irrelevant. Since people do seek God, there must be more to God than just comfort. I don't know I may be worng.

  • I think so

Whether you actually believe a god exists or not, I don't think that anyone will deny that the thought is comforting. And I think that this was why the idea of a higher power was created in the first place; to give humans a purpose and assure them of eternal life. Without these two things, the whole mindset of humanity is disturbed, so it was easy to create them.

  • People need God for comfort

People need God as a reason to get out of bed every morning. they need it so they can feel that there is someone watching over them and taking care of them. they need to know that when they die, that's not the end, they need to know that there life was just meaningless and one of billions that have already been lived. basically, it just makes the world seem less scary.

  • Depends. . .

I used to think that about people, but since I now belive in God (or a higher power) it changed my view. Still, it may be like that for some people, but when you find God, you'll change your oppinion. I'm just speaking from experiance, so I may be mistaken.

  • yes

yes i think god is just a confert b/c it don't make sence to me. There is no real profe that god was here. I think people just make themselfs belive there is so they have something to sort of look forward to or if some one close to them dies they make themselfs think they are with some one better. But I gess no body knows for sure!

  • as it all is

yes, i'm afraid i do believe that religion and society and all that made god are just comforts. but we've given them names and motives and voices (our own), so now we're just comforting ourselves. like having a sock puppet. an imaginary friend. Energy exists, but with no name, motive or voice. anything is else is you speaking through a sock puppet. people use it as a catalyst for comfort, fear, a voice, a reason, and a scape goat.

  • Comfort PLUS

Beena and Keyman7 have it correct. -_- I know in my heart, that God is peace, the ultimate provider, protector, councilor, warrior, comforter, hero, example setter. *He* is the best Father a person could ever have!

  • logic vs need for comfort

I’m 14, struggling to sleep on the odd night. I'm trying to find proof of an after life, when I look at it logically; the answers I get from parents about god is usually “there has to be because other wise what would happen after death, Nothing?” this seems to me to just be away to cover for the scary truth of not having anything to continue on after death. A simple excuse mankind has mad up to comfort ourselves but then I fear the nothingness after death and want to believe in God.
