I am accepting the general definition of faith as belief either without supporting evidence or without sufficient evidence. In any other area of life this would be considered irrational and dangerous but religions appear to stress faith as a virtue. Why is this?

Well, that's the mystery, isn't it? There's really no coherent proof, and yet one is expected to believe something anyway....I'll be curious to see what others say about this.

Well, faith is essential for life in a way. If I remember back to my scientific method, I think they said that you can never prove anything, only disprove. Given that, we can not prove that the sun will rise every morning, but we get out of bed anyway. In a world where we can not know the full consequences of our actions (butterfly etc. etc) we still have to act. To do so requires faith - not necessarily religious faith, but faith in something (perhaps science).
