Well, there’s a popular scientist who has found a “God Gene”... a reason for humans believing in God. It has to do with evolution and survival tactics. If anyone has more information to share or insights… OR QUESTIONS, on this, let me know because I’m fairly adept in this subject.

That’s retarded! Then how come their are MANY ppl who don’t even start believing in Him untill late in their life!? That’s really ridiculous…my genes r the same make as anyone else’s…But God did make them!

I don’t think that a ‘God Gene’ is possible. I mean there isn’t a gene that makes you like wearing blue jeans over dress slacks, it’s sorta the same principal. Scientist have been wrong before. . .

while I doubt there is an actual God gene, there is actually a map in our pituitary gland which has basically our whole lives planned out for us: our tastes, interests, etc.

I could not fathom as to the evidence of such a claim, but before I make judgement on its validity, I must see the evidence. This concept is completely feasbile, however.

capacity? And does it disprove the existance of God?Voted for by AshesToDiamond.
I doubt that there’s a gene that makes us believe strongly either way. However, I’d entertain the possiblity of there being a gene to make us have the capacity to believe in a god of some sort. I say this only because of the number of cases I’ve heard along the lines of “well, this was happening in my life and then this happened and now I believe”. So maybe it’s a combination of both. But would the proof of this gene, if it does exist, then disprove the existance of at least the Christian god? After all, the claim there is that we ALL are given the chance to believe and be saved. Surely that god wouldn’t create a person INCAPABLE of belief?

Let me clarifyVoted for by leggomyeggo.
I recently picked up a book entitled “The GOD Gene” by Dr. Dean Hamer, a genetecist. If anyone is familiar with his work, he was a proponent for a gay gene, and details that scientific process in his book “Science of Desire”.
Basically, in this book, he presents a guage of spirituality via a test called the Self-Transcendence test, which is a TCI test. It gauges someone’s spirituality. It is important, however, to discern between spirituality and religiousness. They are very different. And this doesn’t even make reference to intrinsic religiousness and extrinsic.
Basically, he presents his case in a very believable way, and determines that there is a gene responsible for someone being more spiritual than others, and the gene is also responsible for someone’s likelihood of believing in a God. Of course, there is a certain balance between natrue and nurture, and it is not completely determined by the gene, but a good percent is.

what?Voted for by crystaltips.
What are the talking about ‘god gene’? to me a load of codswallop! I think wether you believe or not is down to the influences in your life. Your parents, your friends or situations you have been through in life. A gene i highly doubt i swear they make it up sometimes …

What the crap?Voted for by Addai.
GOD IS NOT IN YOUR GENES!!! if God was in your genes, then that means you would kinda have to believe in Him from the day you were born, right? I didnt get saved til i was 12!! Whether you believe in God or not IS a choice, its not in your genes…GOD IS AWESOME!!

Possible..Voted for by justonewish.
I think that a gene that controls spirituality is definitely possible. It doesn’t not control whether or not one believes in God directly, but.. it controls how spiritual one is. But of course, as it has been stated here, the circumstances in which one lives will also determine how spiritual one is.

i doubt genes have anything to do with it.Voted for by redbrita.
i once saw a poster with the "God Spot", a bit of the brain that lit up (had blood flow, signalling usage of that part of the brain) whenever thinking about God, even if they weren't religious. however idon't know if the poster was a joke, but the limbic system (emotions) might have an input, or stuff like that. to thinking about it, that is, not any kind of evidence

Above Posts Show Lack of Understanding of GenesVoted for by InfoCorrector.
The posts above show a lack of understanding about the nature of genes and the nature of the VMAT gene. "God Gene" is a misnomer. For one, the researcher talks about the gene making one more susceptible to belief in supernatural entities or even aliens, not just God.
Secondly, a single gene rarely has full influence on a personality. Single gene disorders or traits are rare. Most are a result of several genes acting on other genes, all being acted on by the environment.
A "God Gene" if it does exist will not make you believe in anything. It only prediposes you to a belief and makes you more likely to believe something.
So-called cancer genes also don't have to give you cancer. They only predispose you to cancer if certain environmental factors are met and if they are mutated in a certain way.
If you take a skin cell, you will also find genes for hair-colour, height, genes that tell your stomach to produce gastric acid, genes that that produce insulin, genes that produce glucagon, genes that do this and do that. However, because it a skin cell, the machinery shuts off unnecessary genes.
Just because you have the gene, does not necessarily mean it will give you its trait.
Besides, I doubt there's a single gene that influences your religious behaviour. There are likely to be more "god genes" lying around.
