There was a theory that has since been pretty much disproved that organisms could spawn from pre-existing matter, just out of the blue.
The reason why they thought this was was becasue one guy threw his sweaty shirt into a sealed barrel of rice and in a matter of weaks there were mice in there.
It's called Sponataneous Generation and it's rival theory is the drastically more accepted theory of Biogenesis, the teory that all living things come from living things.
Also, another guy collected stones from a nearby pond that looked, when placed in a certain order, like a frog morphing from a stone into a frog. Spontaneous Generation? What do you think? ~James

Superstition is an irrational belief that an object, action, or circumstance not logically related to a course of events influences its outcome.
Why does this reasoning occur? (from http://www.kilty.com/reason.htm#Post%20Hoc)This reasoning is insidious because it is programmed to occur automatically in all animals, including humans. In a hostile world survival depends on making connections between threats and danger; and, often there is no penalty for classifying something a danger when it is not one. For example, a dog bites into a newspaper which the sadistic newsboy has laced with a lit firecracker. After being frightened by the firecracker, the dog is forever afraid to bite newpapers again because this causes loud noises. Obviously, there is no penalty the dog pays for his unfounded fear of newsprint.

How else would life start?Voted for by Mia Donna.
Biogeneration always seems to make so much more sense than spontaneous generation. It does make more sense. And I don't believe spontaneous generation exists anymore, nor does it need to. I do believe God created the world, but I also believe in evolution. I believe spontaneous generation billions of years ago, and evolution following it were God's plan. I won't get into the long theory that I believe in of how life formed on earth, but it makes a lot of sense if you read about it. It basically includes certain compounds and gasses coming together in such an industrious way that life eventually formed. So I believe in spontaneous generation years and years ago, but not anymore.
