Why are soldiers treated so poorly?

Everywhere I look, soldiers returning home from Iraq are being treated like second-class citizens for fighting in a war that the average citizen disagrees with. Why is this?

  • Get off your asses then!

When I returned home, I was spit on and cursed. People look at me like I'm some sort of serial killer. I disagree with the war and Bush's policies as vehemently as anyone else, but why are you treating us like crap because of it? If you don't like the fact that I served my country, then get up off your ass, go over there, and fix the situation your way.

  • i understand...i respect...others just don't get it

i highly respect soldiers and what tey do. i understand that some of them feel exactly as we do and you cannot hold this war against them. others don't get this, since we cannot take our anger our fruistration out directly on the president or senate we are stupid enough to take it out on innocent people...our soldiers...who fought to protect us and protect freedom who were just doing their job. i respect soldiers and hate to see people put them down becuz of some other idiots mistake.

  • well truthfully...

people treat soldiers poorly after a war they do not agree with because it is a way to fight against a war they could not agree with. i dont know if anyone agrees with that but thats what i think.

  • against army concepts? MEDIA!!

i think its alot of bias, swayed by media. this is coming from over in australia, we sent troups over too but i havent heard of anyone being treated poorly. however i don't support the idea of an army at all, because im an idealist who wishes guns weren't necessary i am aware of how unrealistic it is, but i can't help wishing it. i don't wish for 'world peace', just more humane and dignified ways of sorting out disagreements.

  • The Marching Pawns

Because the government simply dosen't care about its soldiers. The purpose is to fight, kill, and obey; The government see's to it that this is what transpires. It's very sad that the puppetmaster's ( so to speak) would treat their puppets so unjustly, but its as true as it is shocking. One thing i find absolutelly sickening is the fact that the United States use's its soldiers as guinea pigs in many situations. For example foot soldier's in the vietnam war were given hormonal growth inhibiters, and other potentially deadly chemicals to moniter the effects. These kinds of experiments continue today in such conflicts as the over publicized tv " war on terrorism". It comes down to the fact that soldiers are nothing more than pawns to the government. They are readily available, effective, reliable, and expendable.

  • No one cares anymore

I wish we had no need for military use, but we do. Because we do, though, I support the military and soilders 100%. It may be because I come from a military family, but that's besides the point.

Soilders are treated so poorly because no one understands what they go through or what they have to do. It's partly because of the media, partly because of politicians, and partly because no one cares anymore. There were time, believe it or not, when soilders were considered to be the greatest people on earth. Not always the case today.

Everyone can understand why media is to blame, but why politicians? There's a little something called a stress card, which former President Clinton came up with. The stress card allows in training civillians to flash those things and get out of anything. It's a terrible thing to have since most of the people defending our freedom have no idea what they're doing. Now, not all soilders use the stress cards. Those guys are the ones I admire the most. They tough it out and that's what makes them great.

Also, politicians and politics don't fully support our military services. So we have a president who was in the military. Yay. Does he do anything to help the military now? No.

Citizens just flat out don't care. They have their opinions, which they are entitled to, and all that, but why not give a returning army service man a pat on the back or a "Thank you", even if you don't fully believe in what they're fighting for. Those small gestures mean more to them than any kind of award or medal they might get.

As for why Iraqi citizens are doing what they are, please understand that it is not all of them. The ones who attack and kill our guys belong to their own radical group. I really do like to believe that the citizens who don't attack us the way the radicals do are truely grateful for our help. The only reason they're yelling for us to get out, is because they want to stand on their own legs, as it were, and walk. They don't want another nation to hold their hand while they get their own nation together.

The point: No one wants to believe we need military force to defend ourselves.
