Is there such thing as a soul? What is it? Is it immortal? In what sense? Is it present only in humans, or in all life, or in all of existence? Is there any separation between one person’s soul and another’s? Is this a real separation or illusory? What distinguishes the soul from God? Does the soul contain any of the individidual identity and if so, what of it? Where did the concept of the soul come from?
These questions are merely here to encourage some deeper thought on the issue. Feel free to answer some or none or even questions I never asked pertaining to the soul.

A soul is the real you. When I look at you I am not seeing the real you. I am merely peering at the house you live in.

Is There Such A Thing As A Soul? Yes, there is such a thing as a soul, and everything around you has one. What Is It? A Soul is an entity if you will. It learns and 'grows' through its time here on Earth (I.E. Your life). Is it immortal? In what sense? A Soul is immortal, yes, in a sense that it will never die. A spiritual entity such as the soul cannot die. That doesn't mean that it can't return to the Earth again. That means it can't die. A soul may choose to come back to Earth again should it need more 'growth'. If it has satisfied its craving for knowledge, what ever that knowledge may be, it can choose to stay in spirtual form and not return to the Earth. This does not mean it has died, it merely means the soul is done with this plane of existance if you will. Wether you call this Heaven, or what have you, is your choice. Is it present only in humans, or in all life, or in all of existence? Souls are present in every living thing. Now, I use the term living very lightly. Please remember just because something is inanimate doesn't mean it isn't alive (Humans tend to think if it doesn't walk, talk, breath, reproduce, or die it isn't alive. This is far from the truth). There are also different levels of exsistance (to think other wise is rather arrogant of you), I don't know what they are and I feel the only way to find out is to have my soul reach the next 'plane'. Is there any separation between one person’s soul and another’s? Every soul is, in a sense, tied in with all other souls. Now this may be we are all souls splintered from a universal soul, which I tend to see as a good possibility. What better way to learn than to branch off? And if every soul is just a branch of a 'divine' soul, if you will, then that 'divine' soul is a rather smart entity. But every soul is an individual as well. If this were not true we would all be alike, all have the same things to say and AllPhilosophy would be a rather boring place. Is this a real separation or illusory? The seperation is a real seperation. Have you ever had a best friend that you could finish their sentences? Or known when something bad happend to them? This, I believe, is an example that proves souls do exist. And the two people are like that are because their souls have known each other for a long amount of time (I.E. You meet someone you feel like you've known forever... Maybe you have). With this 'friendship' over the vast amounts of time the souls have, in a sense, joined together. Yet, at the same time are seperate because one is you and the other is your best friend. What distinguishes the soul from God? God is just a religious figure head. Yet if 'God' is the 'Divine' soul then there is no real difference. You are just another part of that entity learning for yourself and it. Where did the concept of the soul come from? The concept of the soul is more or less a form of labeling. The human spirit came to be known as a 'soul' and that label just stuck with it throughout the years. As for it's origin, I have no real clue as to who first used the word and what they truly meant by it. It's amazing how much things can change throughout history...

Oath to AcceptVoted for by Mujtaba H Zaidi.
Soul is the real thing imprisoned in the cage of body. Body is merely appearance, and is mortal too.Have anyone read “Oath to Accept” under the tag “Acceptance” in this site? There has been discussed soul’s relation in details. When the Holy Spirit i.e. the Supreme Being had created our souls and took oath of worshipping none, but Him(Almighty God), and soul replied in positive. Soul is a pure thing which will never die;it is immortal, and bodies are mortal. Soul is the virtuous and chaste part of ourselves.

The Soul's Purpose on EarthVoted for by PsydewaysTears.
Is there one? Our flesh makes up everything that enables us to do the things we do. The existence of a soul controlling our bodies would render our brains obsolete. Unless it is your belief that there are such decisions that only “saved individuals” make that can only be accomplished by a soul, and that a brain is simply incapable of concluding the same. And yet, it still requires a brain to amount to the belief of a soul. Unless it is also your belief that brain dead humans are still subject to damnation unless they accept your lord and savoir as their own because it is not our brains that choose, but our souls. So which is it? Is everything I’m saying right now a product of my soul…. or my brain? Both? Neither?

What we interpret as emotions, our personality and our thoughts is what people call souls, therefore a bunch of electric signals in our brain is our soul.

I have one of thoseVoted for by Happy 420.
I describe the Soul as the part of me that is the conduit between my Mind and Body and the Universe.
God is the Energy that is the Universe.
I imagine all things to have a soul only man has the mind to conceptualize and the ability to challenge the authority of his own soul. The power to challenge the soul is that magic “choice” Christians talk about.

The Truth is..Voted for by becomingbroken.
The truth is there is no divine truth, that we can prove. Some die and see a lite, some die and see nothing, in cases were people were brought back. I personally think that there is somtihgn thta can linger if it is not at peace. There is no Casper the friendly ghost, there are things with unexplainable presences, feelings, things that have not filled there dharma, (no im not budist) and still have unresolved conflicts with the living. Has anyone ever Felt the presence of somthing different, the anger in an empty room? Some thing resides there. Somthing we wont understand until t happens to us, we live in a world full of questions, closed minds, and uncertainty, althought its said religion is the opiate of the masses, maybe each person sees what they expect and everything after death is mearly a subconscience manafestation of what we dreamed of… Explaining why a christian sees light, and athiest sees nothing. But my questions is, what of purgatory what of a waiting place for judgment, is that the darkness, or was it a vast nothingness, .... this topic is never ending, once the mind has been opened,... Think, not of what youve been forcefeed and chosen to digest as your own idea, think og it as what it is, and unanswered question

I don’t believe in an eternal soul. If a soul exists,I I think that it is ephemeral. If there is some sort of soul it is a lonely one, isolated from the rest of man kind. Can you ever truely know someone?

The Astral BodyVoted for by justonewish.
If you have ever heard of anything along the lines of astral travel, you may already know where I’m going with this. I’ll explain the subject of astral travel here..
When you fall asleep you dream, that is obvious. Sometimes you remember your dreams and sometimes you do not but you are always dreaming in sleep. What a dream is is your astral body traveling on the astral plane, but clouded by subconcious images and sounds from your mind. Astral travel is when you force yourself to get rid of those things and you are left with just the astral plane. The astral plane is much like the physical – every physical body has an astral body. This includes inanimate objects. You can see them, touch them, manipulate them – but only on the astral plane.. because you are only using your astral body. Your real body is left behind when you sleep because you need rest. When you learn about astral travel you also learn about many other planes, such as planes similar to Heaven and Hell, a plane where nightmares come from, and the like. You would also learn that you can become posessed if you accept a demon from one of these planes into your body. The astral body is thought to live on forever after the physical body perishes, and it can forever roam the astral plane and other planes. Things like time travel and instant teleportation are also possible in the astral, theoretically making it possible to learn anything at all.
Now, while that may not be the traditional way a soul is thought of, I think it is accurate. There are astral travel communities online, there are astral travel meetings where people project into the astral at the same time and meet up.. I have no proof of this, though, but it makes sense to me. I, myself, have never done this.. but almost have a few times. I encourage everyone to look into astral travel – it would be amazing if you could know anything you wanted at will, would it not?

Just… nobody knows. I personally feel we’re all connected and tied in some way or another, which would explain our visions and dreams and glimpses of things… how people see briefly into the next 5 minutes, and deja vu. That’s all.

An Attempt to Explain the UnexplainableVoted for by AWESOME.
The soul is the ethereal part of the total human being. Mind, Body, Soul. The soul is often overlooked and/or neglected in our western society. We educate our mind. We develope our body. But going to church on sundays does not develope the soul. It's no wonder so many people doubt it's existance. And for those non church goers, they identify the soul with the church and ... But the soul is the intangible part of us that one forgets. Your body/mind is so interconnected, and one has to teach the mind to think of/recognize the soul's very existance. The soul permeates every aspect of the body, but to feel it, one has to learn. The fundamental energy behind humans is the soul. One might grasp the concept as the DNA of the ethereal. Just as DNA is the blueprint for the body, the soul is the blueprint of who we are upon the higher realms. Our brains think. To some degree we can learn to think differently. But how we feel towards things, Our morality and values are not DNA or the wiring of our brain. This is the soul. Our conscience? that is the soul. The mind would die w/o the body to feed it. The body needs the mind to control it. The body needs the soul to bind the atoms, the cells together. The mind needs the soul to give it it's basis of being. But the soul is the energy, neither created or destroyed that is independant of the mind/body which these two cannot exisist without.

Man is a multiphasic creatureVoted for by Cosmic Rose.
The human being is multiphasic in its nature consisting of what some might consider in the same manner as layers of bein-ness. Most perceive that they are physical creatures, bound within physical bodies, imprisoned within bone, flesh and skin. However... it is our consciousness which is responsible for creating our physical form as well as our physical reality and not the other way around. Not every aspect of the personality is physical and as such it is merely our conscious focus on the physical which leads us to believe that it is. That focus is able to be placed elsewhere and so too the personality which does so during the dream state nightly. Consciousness is not simply locked up inside the skull, powerless to escape it but rather a way of perceiving various dimensions of reality. It is not bound to the physical senses that only permit one to perceive the three dimensional world. The ego also does not carry the complete burden of our identity but it is what we MOST utilize to identify our physical SELVES at the exclusion of identifying with the subjective and infinite dimensions from which ALL objective reality flows.
The soul is simply an aggregate energetic body that has been involved in the process of evolution both while a part of the physical body/mind experience as well as outside and beyond it in other dimensions or reality structures. Physical life is in reality a dream of the soul which is projected onto the manifest aethers within the physical realm where it can be seen and perceived as REALITY. The soul is part (organ) of a being's multidimensional structure... in other words. Of course this is not a biblical definition of a soul but neither is a soul bound by biblical interpretations.
There is a distinct difference between spirit and soul. Spirit is a neutral flowing force such as energy is a force which animates life. It presents what could be considered a super consciousness which exists within and outside of all reality aka OMNIPOTENT/Omniscient. Spirit could be considered the Godhead/father of the so called holy trinity while soul would be the mother aka holy breath and mind/conscience would be the offspring/son... of the union between force/spirit and breath/soul when united by the power/energy of love.

The SoulVoted for by Neko-Hikaru.
I think that the "soul" is the essence of your existance. Your body is something that you operate to your will, and you can be part of the tangible world with it. What is a soul? Your soul is the spark that starts life. Take out the myth, the legends, the tall tales, and that's what you get. It is the configuration of all the events in your life that make you, well, you! As you grow and go through life, your soul is refined. When you die, your soul is completed. That is how I see a soul.

SpiritVoted for by Tenshi Asakura.
The soul is an ethereal being that coexists within us, and that can enter at certain moments, creating de'ja'vu in a sense. Religion is sort of like a membership into a gate. there are many religions therfore the many gates you can enter. Back to the main idea of the soul. The soul is not a parasite, if anyone was thinking that. I believe that when we all sleep the soul drifts off into a state of its own "life". However if a soul does not take in the fact of a religion that the soul merely floats in a vast pool of darkness, to be forgotten for all eternity.

Spirits, Souls, and GhostsVoted for by DawnyDawner.
to me, there are three things in this world that our bodies posess. Most people have a soul and a spirit. mainly, it's 50/50. the soul is the real you. the person who you want to be, but can't come out. it's hidden, but when you let it all out on something, like an audition or something, your soul just appears to help you out and that is when you do something you never knew you could do. the spirit is simply your will. you could say it's like school spirit. it keeps on going and going and cheering nonstop to keep on going. our spirits tell us to keep on going no matter what. it is the purest thing we have in our lives.
now, when you die, it is said that you have a ghost that stays on earth, or you go to heaven or hell. well, it all depends. the only reason why you would still have a ghost is because you have something you need to finish, or you don't belong in heaven or hell. it's mainly needing to finish something because hell usually takes all.... anyway, after you die, your soul and spirit wander around on earth some. if you are good enough, your soul will go to heaven and become an angel, maybe even a guardian angel to watch over your loved ones. if you go to hell, then your soul goes there and is transformed into a demon. what happens to the spirit, you ask? it continues to wander the earth. it is somewhat like a ghost, but it isn't there to finish or complete something, it is there to keep the hopes of their loved ones going. spirits are cheerleaders. they cheer and cheer to help others.
the difference between guardian angels and spirits when watching over loved ones is simple. the angels actually protect bringing extreme luck or something. the spirits make sure that the hopes of the others never goes away and they also help make them feel happy.

Cute, but Bullshit
How can you say that when you look at me you don't see the real me? How can you say that something that you do not see (the soul) is more real that the physical body that you do actually see, feel, taste, etc? I call it Bullshit, but feel free to disagree (and be wrong).May 4, 2005

youre bullshit
the house in which is spoken is meant "The body" the body isnt the real you, its the soul inside. yes you can feel and taste and see and shit but it is just a body, the SOUL is what gives those senses to the body, the soul is the driving force in life and without, the body cant existAugust 16, 2007
haha, youre funny when youre angry
Come on, all of our senses are merely representations of chemical reactions and electric stimuli in our brain, and are therefore no more real than any dreams one might have. All of our senses are open to disruptance and are therefore not exactly trustworthy. Now i dont entirely agree with the first comment here about the soul, but i agree even less with your barbaric response to it.Xelgaroth
