Wiccans- why do peple always assume the worst?

So yeah, i'm wiccan. What I'm asking now, is why do people always assume the worst of you is you say that you are a wiccan, or a witch, or, indeed, a part of any kind of Paganism at all? So there's a line in the Bible which uses the word 'witch'. They are not referring ti wiccans of pagans or any religion at all, but a woman or man who makes posions or other potions whith the intent to harm. Eveyone knows this, but they still feel the need to judge. Why? If any Christans are reading this who are strongly against Pagans, maybe you'd like to explain? BTW- I;m not making a dig against christians, indeed, I do have Christian friends who love me very much.

I believe people who don't like wiccans or any other type of magic related Religion are forced into believeing what they're parents believe. Half of my family are Wiccan and I think Wiccan is an intresting religion. I can't stand people who automaticly believe they are a bunch of satan worshippers. if they took 2 minutes to read anything about Wicca they'd see wiccans don't believe in the devil. *sigh* the pure ignorence.

The usually assume the worst because they were brought up in a culture where such things are generally feared or hated. I'm a recently converted druid, and i have a similar problem... if a person has any idea at all what a druid is, i'm accused of condoning human sacrifice. Doesn't matter that it was never proven that druids did such things.

  • I don't get it either

It is strange how people can believe so much in one thing and condemn every thing else. I am not a wiccan but I see no reason why I can't accept someone who is. Sometimes i find it hard to understand why other people cannot do the same. As you said, the bible talks about "witches". The sad thing is that everyone does not know that they are reffering to a man or a woman who is trying to harm someone through potions or something. I have asked some christians who believe wiccans are horrible people or who believe homosexuality is a sin why they think that, and they never give me a straight answer.

Well, I suppose the media might have something to do with it, as well as the fact that those beliefs about human sacrifice and such have been passed down for so long. I understand where you're coming from though. I'm a Christian, but I used to be Wiccan. I get upset when I hear preachers teaching false things about Wicca. I also get upset when they tend to focus on Wicca as somehow the most evil thing next to homosexuality, which is another thing they tend to pick on. What they fail to think about is that everyone has sinned and no better or worse than anyone else. So regardless of if witchcraft or homosexuality is a sin, so is pride, greed and gossiping, which many of them do.

I personally believe that witchcraft is sinful, but at the same time, I feel no need to point fingers at you just because you do it. I mean, if you claimed to be a follower of Christ I might sit you down and have a talk with you, but even then I doubt I would scream about hell and all that. I think what alot of Christians don't understand is that we're supposed to be making disciples and not converts. Conversion has to do with religion, but being a disciple is more than that. In Jewish culture, as I understand, someone's disciple would give up his whole life to follow his rabbi, even to the bathroom, in order to learn to be just like him. The thing was, when the rabbi said, "Follow me," the dude would have to choose to do it. So then, everyone has a choice, and if someone chooses not to follow my Rabbi, then I can't expect them to live the way He would want them to live.

Sorry to ramble like that. I hope it makes sense.

people fear what they don't understand. but they also don't care to try to understand. if they were to give the time of day to learn that wicca is about nature and not satan worshipping, they would see that it is a peaceful concept. people are too caught up in their own pride though to admit when they are wrong, and they would rather bash other religions and ways of life rather than have people think they have gone astray from their own.

I also am wiccan, and my step mother hates me because of it. Otherwise, though, most people seem to be fairly accepting, even when I unexpectedly tell them. I just suppose it's the type of person you tell...

  • Some beleive differently

Personally I am a Christian, but believe so much differently than other Christians that some times I have the same feeling you describe. I have Wicca friends and atheist friends and vampiric friends. Does that sound like a normal Christian to most people? From the prejudice I recieve, not likely. And you are completley correct in the fact that the word witch in the Bible was translated incorrectley. It's true translation was poisoner. Poisoner could have been talking about any number of things. Poisoner of the mind, of the people, or of the drink.

  • feared power

some people fear wiccans because they don't want to beleive in any other power then god. Thats another fear related sort of to vampires in the books- they are immortal. they don't like to think that other forces could be at wok in the universe thats why some don't beleive in fate or destiny. I have been a wiccan for six years and when people come in my room and see my meditation candels and other items related to my beleif they instantly freak and go start rumars about me being a witch. they are so cnfused with Wiccan and Witch that they beleive i worship satan which is entirly untrue.

  • Power...

Well, from what the bible teaches, a witch or sorceror is anyone who uses ungodly power. Ungodly power can be summed down to any power that is not of God, referred to as the spirit of antichrist. The bible clearly explains how to tell what is and is not of God in 2 John 1:7 "Many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist."

So the reason, put simply, why people are so quick to judge wiccanism, witches and warlocks, sorcerors, etc., is simply because the bible shows us clearly what to watch out for. Fortune tellers catch our interest because in the nature of mankind, there is the longing to have power - power whether to harm or to help - and the only power that should be used is the power given by God above.

Horoscopes will tell you your future. Thats what makes them so popular. But the spirit of antichrist has come in a way that cause people to want to be a part of it. It's a deception... the power that comes from evil sources is exactly what God despises, and it should not be practiced by anyone. If you think that "evil sources" was a bad choice of words on my part, then consider this: There are only two powers - good, and evil - the power of God is good, and any other power is evil. Simple.
