Why do we believe that Homosexuality is wrong when God said that it was, but we still eat seafood when he also said it was wrong too?

I want to know why people follow God's statement that Tho shall not lyith with a man as tho lyith with a woman when he also says Tho shall not eat a finless fish? or for that matter, wear a combination of linens.

so why do Christians pick and choose which scriptures they will follow and which ones they won't. is that classified as true belief?

  • Either this means good Christians go to hell, or the Bible is partial, and wrong.

I have often pondered this. That eaters of oyster and squid, and those who wear jackets of, say, wool and linen are not subjected to the same kind of “Bible-justified” antagonism that homosexual people meet.

    Let me clarify.

In Leviticus, the passage, as Kazrith stated, "'You shall not lie with a man, as with a woman.” – Lev 18:22. is right there next to "'neither shall there come upon on you a garment made of two kinds of material.” Lev.19:19. It’s up there with the rule that anything from the sea without fins must not be eaten – say, oysters.

The Bible, which, as Christians surely agree, should not be inferred partially, stresses equally the sins of homosexuality, mixed material, and sea food. There’s the proof, read it yourself. Surely, reasonably, we must assume that seafood eaters, and material mixers are JUST AS SINFUL as homosexuals. But why is it that homosexuality is so condemned by the Church, and the other two…so abandoned? If you are just as easily eternally damned for such sins given an equal amount of importance in Leviticus, then why is it so many Christians willfully eat seafood, and wear polyester and wool??

Are all these otherwise faultless Christians really going straight to hell?

Many people will argue we have to use our intuition to interpret exactly what is meant here – but isn’t that tampering with the will of God? Isn’t it obvious, as Kazrith says, to see there is a logic fault here – where do we decide we are allowed to interpret what we like? Taking his word into our own hands? Isn’t that sinful too?

    It seems to me we are only left with two options;

    1) We accept gays, seafoodies, fabric perverts, animal crossbreeders, women who don’t sacrifice two pigeons after each and every period to make themselves clean, and everyone else condemned in Lev to be going straight to hell. Including Christians in these categories. Rules are Rules.

    2) We assume the Bible is partial, flawed, not the word of a god who would condemn his own followers for such small faults – or that this god is malevolent and spiteful.

How can we logically believe anything otherwise?

((If you will argue homosexuality is just “plain wrong”, then I challenge you to reasonably suggest WHY. I believe Stephen Law’s, although fairly simple, paper on homosexuality can crush any claims that there is in fact anything provably “wrong” with practicing homosexuals. I happily await antagonism ))

  • just adding a little something to the opinions above...

"so why do Christians pick and choose which scriptures they will follow and which ones they won't."

Human nature. If it's easy to follow they'll follow. If it's harder or if it is a rather minor offense, they'll be more lenient. Much more lenient. Hating someone is easy. Hating homosexuals is easy. Not eating seafood is easy too, yet that's a rather minor sin (or whatever you'd call it... is it really a sin?). Anyway. Oh and when you say "...when God said that it was [wrong]..." God never said it was wrong. The bible said it was. The Church. And you really have to be careful when believing what the Church or the bible say. Both were written/founded by imperfect humans, and neither reflect exactly what God wants or what Jesus said...

  • Do they know we are Christians by or Love?

I can only answer your question from my side of the street. I am a christian who doesnt mind admitting that I am a sinner and a hypocrit. This doesnt bother me, because so is every other human on the face of the planet. Fortunately for me God was smart enough to know that I would shove my beliefs down other peoples throats and call them bad to make myself feel better. He was also compassionate enough to send me a Savior. That is why, when I get too caught up in my pompous self and start killing everyone with the law, I start limiting myself to the red words. You know, the ones in those red letter edition bibles, where the words of Christ are the only red words. One of the boulders that Jesus flung at the pharisees, was that it is not what goes into a mans mouth that makes him unclean. It is what comes out of it.

Jesus didnt seem to spend much time worrying about what people ate other than feeding them. I have never found one verse where he with his own words condemned a homosexual, or a prostitute or a thief or a leper blah blah blah. He did, however, condemn the spirit of the pharisee. He spoke out at the religious leaders who heaped heavy laws on the people in order to maintain their own semblance of power and control. I believe he even called them sons of satan or something similar. The only act of violence I have ever read about carried out by him was running the money changers out of the temple. These were people who charged large sums of money to the poor folks who had to travel long distances for their required pilgrimage to the temple where the law required them to make offerings. So the ticket scalpers so to speak, set up to probably price gouge and take what little money these people had for something they believed was necessary for their cleanness in the sight of God. Again blah blah blah

In truth, I believe that I dont serve a little God, so there are no little sins. And I'll be damned if I will stand on my hind legs and chunk stones at a homosexual, a prostitute, a drug dealer, a mass murderer, or a clam eater and pretend that my sins are not equally as offensive in the light of perfection. I can quote scripture till I throw up and it won't prove a thing. Even satan can parrot what he has heard and sound really good doing it, as a matter of fact, I think he did exactly that when he was tempting Christ.

I am saved entirely by grace and grace alone. As long as I am sucking air, I am pretty much guaranteed that I am breaking some biblical law somehow. Sooooooo, I think I will just worry about my own dirty side of the street rather than pointing out the debris that litters yours .

I never read, they will know we are christians by our ability to prove everyone else wrong. If in reality--They will know we are Christians by our LOVE-- most of us are sorry examples a lot of the time. I honestly believe that when we hit the pearly gates, there will be some folks requesting a transfer out of heaven because they just can't associate with the likes of some of the people God let in.

  • Shut up

Hmmm....yes.....take a Bible class before you open debates on biblical issues. Leviticus is full of things like how to take care of different kinds of mold in your house. Basically, Leviticus is God's "Basic Hygiene 101: How to Ensure You Health." In biblical times, people couldn't safely cook oyesters and squid. Or pork, for that matter. Therefore God told people not to eat it to protect them. In this day and age of technology we can safely cook and eat oyesters and squid. And pork. Homosexuality, on the other hand, is a hot-button moral issue in today's society. The two issues are pretty much incomparable. You're nitpicking to make yourself sound intelligent. It backfired. If you can't be flexible and try to apply the Bible to today, and adapt and use current technology, then you're Amish and you shouldn't be on the computer.

  • Technology Shmecnology

The problem with the argument about technology allowing us to eat what was previously denied us in Leviticus is that technology has also allowed homosexuals to be able to consummate their love for one another safely through the use of condoms.

The people who would use this logic are nitpicking to sound intelligent. It obviously backfired.

  • What God said was ok.

Actually something that's interesting to note is that in the New Testament God allows people to eat finless fish, pork, etc. He tells Peter to go ahead and eat what were once "unclean" animals 7 times. Peter being the good Messianic-Jew that he was ended up refusing, plus there was another message behind that, but God said, what was once unclean is now clean. Homosexuality is still unclean however, first of all the natural order of things is male with female, that's how we follow the Godly command "Go forth and multiply." Homosexuality impedes obedience to that rule, also, despite the fact that condoms might make sex safe most of the time, it's also true that without them they would suffer from such diseases as AIDs, and it is still quite a problem in the homosexual community, and on top of that, condoms are not 100% protection, even someone using them could still contract an STD. Such problems could be avoided if God's original ideas for sex were followed, that a man should only sleep with his wife and no one else. Ever. And if you're going to point out that things like dirty needles while doing drugs, and other things like that can cause you to get such serious diseases, well, it's also true that doing drugs is harmful to you and no person who cared anything about their health would be doing them.

  • No technology

The reason it says do not eat finless fish is because they did not have the storage like freezers and such like we do now and the same for the linens because it would cause illness and also like it says do not eat pork because they could not refrigerate it. Think about it this is one of the first books written in the bible so it is very old God was putting laws down for the Jews so they would not become ill. Faggots are a different story you do not see a male dog lying with a male dog it is humanity that comes up with homsexuality if we were animals this issue wouldn't be brought up which is why the animals know what to eat and not to eat.

  • Times

Different aspects of the bible are directed to people at different times in history. Same way your mom would post the chores for the week, on the board. If Tuesday is the day for garbage pickup, would it make sense for her to tell you to take the cans out on Wendsday night, when she knows they'll just sit out there for a week? No. Same way with God. Since He knows everything that has and will ever happen, He's able to write to the church at different time periods to tell them specifically what they can and can't do. Things have changed a lot since then, and the old testament was not directed to the church of all time. Because Jesus came, everything is different. God even says so "Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath" -Colossians 2:16

In other words, we don't have time to dwell on things as unimportant as seafood

  • How about this...

Look, homosexuality is a lack of chromosomes. "God" makes life and faith harder for certain people, i.e. making someone homosexual. It contradicts ideas in the bible but "God" would like you to oversee your sexual impulses and go with the grain.
