Is there such a thing as a Gay characteristic?

many people are convinced that their child will be homosexual because of some small act when they are young. eg. dancing, (boys) playing with trucks and not dolls (girls) and other such things. are these real characteristics of the Gay Gene or is it just the child doing what children do best. having fun.

  • nope

I am gay myself, and I never liked to play with dolls, or dance or anything like that. Parents need to just let their children be who they are and let them play with whatever toys they want to. A boy playing with toys that are supposed to be for girls does not necessarily mean that they are gay. There are no real gay characteristics. All of these are just stereotypes. The only characteristic of gay people is that they fall in love with members of the same sex.

  • Gay Gene???

First of all do not use that phrase unless you have absolutly every idea of what it means. Let me try to explain something to you. There has not been any proven "Gay Gene."

Sexual behaviour is determined while still under fetal development. How it works is this:

Testosterone is converted to Estrogen in the brain by an enzyme called aromatase. This estrogen in the brain during fetal development causes male sexual behaviour. Estrogen cannot freely enter the brain, because of a specific protein called, alpha-fetoproteins. Therefore, only testosterone can enter the brain, not estrogen. So, males produce a significantly larger amount of testosterone than do females. Therefore, females do not have very much conversion of testosterone to estrogen in the brain. Also, since the alpha-fetoproteins bind the rest of their estrogen, females do not get much estrogen in their brain at all. Thus, females develop female sexual behavior. Males have a lot of testosterone, and therefore convert a lot of testosterone to estrogen in their brain. This causes males to develop male sexual behaviour.

Now, here is where I talk about where things can go wrong. Your "gay gene" is not really a correct term. If a male has genetic defect in the gene for his aromatase enzymes in his brain, he may not get enough testoesterone converting to estrogen in his brain. Similarly, if the male does not produce enough testosterone (a defect in a gene that causes the adrenal cortex to produce testosterone) during this fetal period, he will have the same problem. This problem is the development of female sexual behavior. Many men who have this problem are physiologically just like any other male, but, have female sexual behavior. They are attracted to males and act, often, like females in their manarisms and their speech, BUT NOT NECESSARILY.

The same thing can happen to females. If a female has a defect in her alpha-fetoproteins or produce more testosterone than normal during this fetal period, they will develop male sexual behaviour.

You see there is no real "Gay gene." There are multiple genes that could be affected that could lead to incorrect sexual behaviour.

  • there isn't

i don't personally believe that there is a gay characteristic because everybody is different and everybody has different personalities and interests. if there is a gay characteristic then i guess there has to be a straight characteristic and a female characteristic and a caucasion characteristic, etc. people are too diverse to stereotype them.

i personally as a gay guy have one of these characteristics and that is the fact that the majority of my friends are girls. like, my girl to guy friend ratio is about 4:1 lol. anyway, that is just me and i know that this doesn't apply to everyone.
