What is the difference between a homophobe and a racist?

Being black or white, preferring men or women. I see gay rights as the ‘black issue’ of our age.

  • When will people realize - people are people

You can be who you want to be, I’ll support you. To me, denying gay marriage is like saying black people can’t vote.

It shows a lack of empaty. Some people are differnet than you! It’d sure suck if you got put in ‘their’ shoes, and tried to force yourself into a role you didn’t belong in.

The reason the ‘gay issue’ has been brought up more lately is that historically it’s been horrendously hushed up. How many marriages never have sex after the first few years? How many of them realize they are probablly gay but are so entrenched in thinking that that is evil they avoid it?

I had an extremely fascinating time in college helpin g a friend come to terms with the fact that she was gay. She was very religious, and kept saying that Jesus didn’t want her to be gay. My answer? “Jesus wants you to be whoever you are”. Lying to yourself is definately NOT something religion should/would/could preach.

  • Gays ARE the new black...

Homosexuality can not be changed, and if it is changed then the person was never gay in the first place. I am gay, I tried to be straight for 16 lousy years.. it doesn’t work that way. When you become a lesbo/fag and feel you can become straight come back to me and we can talk, until then I feel ppl should mind their own business. Just because something is different does not make it wrong. And this stems back to racism and homophobes.. they are the same, homophobes are just as much a hater as racists, bcuz many a Christian believed in the old day it was a sin to be colored. Anyways all done now, have fun ridiculing my opinion if you like.

  • Gays do Not Choose

Gays do not choose to be gay. They choose to be in a loving relationship, as opposed to a sham perhaps. But to feel in love with someone is not a choice- it’s something that people do. Let’s think about it. Hmm. Have a ‘normal’ life where you are able to have kids, enjoy the sex that begot the kids, be accepted by society, not get offensive names, not get religions (and I do believe in God by the way. God created all people) Or, be gay. Be discriminated against, have religions hate you, have no chance to have kids, be disowned by your family. I wonder- if it were really a choice who would choose to be gay? Probably the idiots who think it is a choice. I mean, you’d have to be pretty stupid to choose to be discriminated against. There have been cases of people trying to ‘wash’ the black off adopted kids. Would it therefore be a ‘choice’ to be black? No. I think gays do have to achieve equal rights but at the same time they’re more the ‘blacks of the new millenium’ because of the media. Apart from odd cases, in which fame is achieved- not normal middle class lifestyles- it is still harder for blacks to achieve than whites. I think gay marriage shouldn’t be allowed because the whole idea of marriage sucks. Apart from kids/financial support/religion I really don’t see the point in marriage. So, unless gay people are religious (this is possible. Religions reject gays, gays do not reject religion) or want financial support I don’t see the point in the token. Then again, that’s my anti-marriage stance- not my anti-gay stance (which is non-existent).

  • Why is this so contraversial?

I as a straight woman do not feel threatened by the relationships of gay individuals. Why do we, as Americans, feel that other people’s relationships are any of our buisness. My husband and I have a public relationship and a private one. I am sure it is the same with a gay couple. The sickening part is that we feel it is our duty to put restrictions on people’s lives. It is very similar to the Jim Crow restrictions so ‘enjoyed’ by African-Americans. We just need to mind our own buisness and not be so worried about what two concenting adults are doing. After all it really is not my buisness and therefore not my place to judge or restrict.

  • I agree

Homophobe is a fear of gays (which i think is dumb and nonexistant). But racism is more of a hatred of another race, not a fear.

I agree with you, it is like the “black issue” of our age. More people need to realize that.

  • What the hell are 'Gay' Rights' anyway?

Marriage is the union before God and (lately)in the eyes of the law. It is mostly a monetary and legal issue nowadays. So what else do you see as a ‘Gay’ right? Besides anything else, any so-called-right is only as good as the majority will behind it. What next? ‘Child rights’ to drink/vote/marry/adopt? List what you percieve as rights (for anyone), with your thinking and maybe a meaningful discussion will ensue.

  • Gay Marriage - Why not?

I see nothing wrong with gay marriage. Calling it a civil union is silly because it basically means the same thing.

  • Most obvious difference is. . .

The most obvious difference between a black person and a gay person is that a black person has no choice about their color and there’s nothing they can do to change it. In this I think stems a difference between racist and homophobe. One can be a homophobe and at the same time not be a racist.
