In todays society, especially in children/teenagers, people are being labelled for what they look like or what music they like and being picked on or abused for this. An example of this is I cannot walk down the street or get on a bus without having “Grebo” or “mosher” shouted at me. It makes me uncomfortable and I feel as though I am being singled out for my looks or musical taste. This happens to a lot of people. I am human, I have views and opinions on things, yet I am being labelled as a depressed, antisocial freak without them even knowing me. Is this right? Or is it another form of descrimination? People won’t stand for racism, what makes this right?

labels are often usefullVoted for by -TheLoneWolf-.
Labels are required. It is not always discriminating. It is simply a way to categorize people, make them easier to understand. for example, I hate pink, but when I see one of those girls who I already labeled "girly" wearing pink I can understand them. If I see someone I labeled in my mind "goth" I won't understand them if they wore pink, on the other hand I would understand them if I found out they cut. Labeling is simply a way to make it easier to understand and remember people.

Labels and CliquesVoted for by Jeni Jaundice.
There is a certain point in most of our lives, usually our teenage years but sometimes longer, that we will look at a person and see a label. In my school there are "goths," preps, jocks, ghettos, gangsters, sluts, and outcasts. Fist of all, the term "gothic" is politically incorrect. Gothic is an archetechtural structure from the medevils. Sure, they may dress dark and listen to heavey metal, or anything along those lines, but that doesn't define who they are. There is a person behind everyone, with there own ideas, values, interests, and standards. Preps are seen as the bouncy happy girls, and boys who wear polos and play guitar. These are just personalities and interests again. Jocks play sports, it's just a hobby. and outcasts are those who don't fit in as well, weather they're not as attractive, or a little bit nerdy, defines this. Everyone in every clique is different, everyone has a personality and is just trying to fit it. Through my eyes, nobody is going to fit inwith anyone until we can look at everyone and see people, see a person instead of a goth, prep, jock, or outcast.

LabelsVoted for by A Dreamer Awake.
Well, we all categorize things. It's natural, but when it comes to people, it is a habit that we must fight. Every person is an individual, and we need to remember that. We all label people, at least sometimes. We just need to try to do it less and learn who people are. We can't complain about it that much. There have always been jerks and there always will be jerks who will say mean things or do mean things to a person because of their outward image. Personally, I don't have a label really. I'm just smart, I have my small group of friends, and I'm in band. Barely anyone knows I'm in band or cares for that matter, so I'm not a "bandy" or something. I'm no outcast, because one of my best friends has a million other friends, too, so she's pretty popular. I don't know what you'd call me, but I like myself, and if you wouldn't get to know me, I would just consider you to be narrow-minded. Since labels aren't really affecting me, I don't know if I'm one to speak much on the matter, but I do have something to mention that no one else has. Labels do offend you and hurt you, no matter how much you think they don't. Those who can shield themselves from the remarks still have doubt placed in their minds about who they are. If it comes down to a crisis, a person might start believing that they just might be what people tell them they are. Why else would people say it? Some people can't even shield the blows that well, and they may actually take the labelling as offense. Many people will commit suicide because they think they are what other people say. I don't understand why you would let people's words get to you like that, but for some people, that is their line of thinking. Labelling is hurtful, and sometimes, people die because of it. For the people who think and care about others, we need to stop passing so much judgement on a first glance and really get to know people. The problem remains with those who don't think and don't care because hate is easier and more enjoyable. Also, if they laugh at others faults, they don't have to pay attention to their own. In all honesty, we can't change the world if people aren't willing to change themselves. The only thing we can do is stop complaining, not label people, get to know people, and then change the minds of others by example. If you really care about this, then do something, don't just talk. Labelling can lead to horrible things (suicide, depression, feeling of worthlessness). Just not liking it and complaining to your friends and the internet is not going to change things, and you will always have reason to complain if you don't act.

it's wrongVoted for by fullmetalfreak.
it's wrong but it will always be around.i tell peopl i'm not goth im not heavy metal i'm just me i like what i like.for people that don't want to get to know sertain groups it's easier to label them this or that.i think it's pointless to label people because no matter what your labeled if your a prep and a goth is your friend then labeling you both those shouldn't change anything about your friendship.that's just an example.

I get labaled alot. Llast year it was the bookworm/nerd. At the bigging of this year it was the poser cause my character changed alot. Now its the russian bitch/punk-rocker/rebel. Labeling is simply a way to categorize people, make it easier to understand them. Really, it is much easier to understand why a prep listens to Britney Spears than it is for a mosher to listen to her. Sometimes people dress and listen to different music to stand out and be different and then whine about it. That is what I hate. If you are different be f-ing pround of it and don't care what you're labeled as.

Ready to give up!The fact that I am not aloud to wear what I want disgusts me. Honestly the fact that I open my locker and there is a drawing or rather a mock up of me and a label that reads Goth/Emo is really unfair, and the fact that when I walk in the street and the word 'Goth' is jeered at me really hurts. It's hard growing up when you're constantly being discriminated and I know its wrong but I feel as if I want to just end it all together, because with no friends; no family to talk to... I'm at the point of giving up.Voted for by thisiswhoiam96.
