It's everywhere! Why are people happier in their on secluded worlds, lying to themselves and putting others down for a belief that they might have? Why are wars started over religion when no one knows the truth? Why are children beat up for being different? ... Why is ignorance such sweet bliss to humanity and yet, at the same time, destroying us?

What is bliss.....if not only a comparison marker with an opposite, like so much of the world around us? For example, Scientists have found that the actual colour of space is beige, it only appears to be black because of contrast with the extreme brightness of the stars around it. So by the same logic, is the apparent 'bliss' we experience in ignorance to the nature of the world true bliss or just such a good feeling relative to the experience of familiarizing yourself with the innumerable harsh realities of it?Voted for by SixStringDebauchery.

Ignorance does not imply ignorantIgnorance of something known to be true does not make one an ignorant person. For example, my brother is an evangelical YUC-a Young Universe Christian. He believes the Bible is God's literal word to humans and believes the Genesis story of creation literally, word for word. He holds two masters degrees, has a thriving counseling practice, is healthy, has lots of money and a great family; he is very, very happy. In fact, he is blissfully happy. He refuses to read any scientific work, and nothing at all about evolution. He tells me that I read too much, that I should just live by faith in Christ alone and that's all I need in life to be happy. What can I say?Voted for by nathanprophet.

Ignorance discourages desireHappiness is synonymous with satisfaction - when you're satisfied, you're happy, you don't want anything else. You'd only desire something if you aren't completely satisfied with what you possess already, and you think that if you achieve your desire your life will be better in some way. Now... it's much easier to desire things when temptations are laid out before you than when you don't know they exist. Ignorance is bliss because you won't want anything better if you don't know that anything better exists. For example, people in North Korea may have poorer living standards than everyone else in the world, but the government tells them that the rest of the world has it a lot worse. So the North Koreans, who don't know that something better exists, are decieved into believing that they are the happiest people in the world. And because they believe that, they are.Voted for by Shya.

Ok, let's analyze...Despite the broken fuses I already have, follwers of a tradition will be hard to get through, unhappily the same tradition brings opposers who are in a chaotic state due to their unhappiness and unpleasantness with a smaller situation. Looking at the big picture one can analyze what is going on... Fear of spiders? I'm afraid of spiders, but I'm bigger than it, so far, nothing can impeach me from smashing it if neccesary for self defense. People who are unaligned with any tradition are fine by themselves, and thus, "the most relative of all", due to locations. E.g: For instance, a common worker of some region in the world... Despite environment and other ambient restrictions, all he will do is to take care of his family (tradition already emphasis this) and, fortunately (or not) for him/her, that'll be all fine because he is doing something related to nature that is protecting themselves from emminent danger... People who are demmed "good" in an X society will try to improve a existent concept of "goodness" and remove the present flaws, and thus, after working onto something, hard, the person will be buried (one day everyone dies) and her/his works will remain useful for other generations. "Evil" people are, on their own, out for themselves at all, but that doesn't mean that evil doesn't generate hard work out of the "good" people. Evil is maledictory to a whole, but it's easier being "evil" than being "neutral" despite situations. A neutral person do follow risks, but regarded of that, it's way less than evil or good people do, because staying inconstant in reference to something can be good, or not, depending of the situation. Lastly, the concept of social contract is a good way of dealing with situations without neglecting the fact that not everyone believes in the same "things", but everyone is still alike, what changes is their "social identity".Voted for by vacuo.

Ignorance is NOT BlissThis is not a philosophy that many of us brought to this Earth from where we came before - this is something that most of us had to learn here. It has been conditioned into our brains and we've adopted it as our own without thinking about what it truly means. In this way the inanity of this statement perpetuates itself. Think about the statement: Ignorance (lack of knowledge, deliberate ignoring of something) Is Bliss (Supreme Happiness). Does this really resonate with you? Or does it resonate with the conditioned thoughts that you've been taught about what happiness is?Voted for by lavawaffle.
If I told you all that there were a great way to find inner happiness and it's the simplest thing in the world to do, do you think hiding your head in the sand would actually make you happier? I think most would be curious and inquisitive. I don't see the rationale behind hiding one's head in the sand.
Well, I'll tell you how to find your happiness. In the words of Joseph Campbell and Bashar: Follow Your Bliss. If you do the things that make you joyful and you express that joy in the Infinite ways that you have inside you, not only will you make yourself incredibly happy and gain a greater and deeper understanding of who you truly are and how special you are, you will also inspire others to do the same. People will see how happy you are, and they'll want to KNOW how you've done it, and you can tell them how simple it all is. Follow YOUR bliss, and follow YOUR joy. We all have different things that really get us going and make us feel good and that's perfectly fine. As seemingly "strange" as your bliss may be, follow it, that path is happiness.
Ask yourself, if you saw someone whom you knew was feeling an incredible sense of inner peace and happiness, would you desire to know how they achieved this state of being? Or would you run away shouting Ignorance is Bliss!? -
Ignorance is a weaknessRalph Waldo Emerson famously said "There is no knowledge that is not power." Ignorance is the direct opposite of knowledge, so it follows that it's a weakness.Voted for by GrateGato.
There is no inherent property of ignorance which brings happiness. The idea that ignorance is bliss only has some truth to it because of the sheer staggering amount of evil that exists in the world we live in. As an ignorant person one can have hope for a bright future for all people, but one with more knowledge will painfully understand that there's no reasonable precedent to believe this is at all likely. This and knowledge of more specific problems are some of the unpleasant realizations that knowledge can bring.
Like with most things there is a flip side to it. Ignorance prevents you from doing and accomplishing things. If you don't know how to do something, you have to pay a lot more to have someone else do it. Examples include cooking, sewing, roofing, fumigation, plumbing, painting, and many more. If you don't know how to swim, you could drown. If you don't understand politics, you have trouble affecting a change. If you don't understand psychology, you have trouble persuading people and understanding yourself. If you don't understand a spoken or written language, you can't understand it or use it to communicate. If you don't know philosophy, you make assumptions and don't own your decisions; you're a slave to the cult of "common sense."
Because ignorance is a weakness, it can be turned against you by your enemies. You'll get blindsided by social ills you were so pleasantly ignoring. You'll get scammed. You'll give your hard-earned money to religious or other nuts you see on TV or in person.
Because knowledge is power and power begets responsibility, if you're one of those pained by knowledge of the world's evils it's up to you to prevent such evils from continuing. Educate others. Get involved politically and voice whatever outrages you. It doesn't matter what you deal with or where as much as you might think. Try starting perhaps with something local. Don't underestimate your power to affect things. The real arrogance is to think you can go through your life without affecting things, or thinking that if you do so you aren't an accomplice to the evils that are done with your knowledge but without your opposition. -

Ignorance -can- be blissVoted for by Deixa.
Ignorance, (or "not wanting to face things") can be "bliss",
the same way Coke (either canned, bottled,.. or powdered)
can provide happiness. (on the short term, while your on it)
Both ending-up doing the exact opposite on the longer run.
Also the same way that becoming dissillusioned about anything,
somewhat "kills" the fun (of anything).
(ie; when gambling, or when beleiving in sensationally magical magic)
Cause even if we can -not think-
for extra immediate comfort or pleasure ;
our subconsciousness, ..
( the submerged part of the iceberg that thinks for itself,
being much more substantial than the visible tip,
which we generally identify as being all of ourselves)
.. is constantly figuring out stuff all by itself,
to eventually know whatever we don't want to.
To then send us signals or tips, in our bubbling thoughts and dreams,
FOR us to get the message and FOR us to act upon them (or not), ..
It depends on us, our readyness to lose, our readyness to let go,
our readyness to self-sacrifice, (which doesn't have to be soo bad)
It's what makes bells ring when we hear or read something true,
us already knowing what we "don't know".
All to eventually gain things like freedom inside,
or freedom from otherwise self-destucting habits,
and thus gaining much more subtle,
and much more permanent forms, of much more real well-being.
Also, things we can ignore can accumulate pretty quick,
as unresolved or unnadressed, or "unclosed" things
can take quite a bit of .. let's call it, "internal processing space"..
sometimes t'il were filled with cobwebs that can date from way back,
preoccupying the larger part of our (quite humanly limited) "internal head space",
and thus possibly getting the better of us* along the way
* "us" referencing our present presence in the moments we live through.
( About the guts needed to get out of traps..
no-one "is" or "is'nt" "courageous" or "not",
we sort of have to make-it-up as we go along.
So without thinking twice, go head first !
saying "Here goes nothing ! " then GO! ; )

Ignorant or Knowledge...As a child, or rather a baby, everything around the boy can easily pique his curiously or even fascinate him. To him, a ball can be equivalent to puzzle—something for him to discover and unravel. Thus, ignorance can be bliss because everything around seems novel to him as if he has entered a new era of marvels and phenomena. No problem and worry can ever occupied him. Awestruck by this “paradise”, he begins to embark on a new quest for knowledge and experience.Voted for by Adolf Hitler.
During his journey, the affliction and misery begins to befall upon the boy when he encountered setbacks and hindrances that encumber his journey. Yet, at the same, he manages to conquer them and feels a growing triumph. Never did he know, more and more higher obstacles impedes his progress as the road begins to ascend until it forms a gradual slope which grows increasingly steeper. Nonetheless, there are still major successes. As they begin to wear him out, he discovers the hard way that there is a dark-side of humanity. Deception driven by greed… Intense rivalry led to betrayal by his buddies… Abandonment triggered by egocentric…. Pressure by high expectation …. Soon, tragedies began to happen on his love interest…friend…or even his parents. This newfound knowledge has a profound effect on his life as it erodes his willpower gradually…
At last, he has reached his destination. No longer as folly as in the past, he finally becomes wise and experienced. Unprejudiced, he had learnt to be open-minded and receptive to new ideas. Everything around him had lost his value. As his days were
Numbered, the “boy” settle down quietly in melancholy as he began his reminiscence of past anguish and sorrow—the return trip……
Bliss is something what everything desire. Yet, at the same time, our insatiable thirst for knowledge was forced to abandon it . Should one halt his quest, he will never answer incessant questions. Dubious and unconvinced, he is unable to find the true contentment and triumph which results from the answers of his question. Hence, from the above tale, I am to exemplify the interrelationship of these two polar opposite terms---ignorance and knowledge. When one is ignorant, he will be increasingly inquisitive to anything that wonders him. Therefore, instinct tells him to search for knowledge and understanding
Once he has accomplished his pursuit for knowledge , he will naturally desire to revert back to his ignorance after undergoing the agony and torment inflicted by challenges.

Naive - children are not ignorantI believe that IGNORANCE is bliss, because those that chose to IGNORE, do so to not experience those mature feelings these comments expressed when refering to the opposition of ignorance.Voted for by LindsayRose.
Main point, re think how we are defining ignorance in this saying. A lot of references seemed to be more a case of naivity rather than ignorance. I DEFINITLY DONT BELIEVE THAT BEING NAIVE IS BLISSFUL. In fact it is probably the opposite, it's scary. To reference a story above "bed bugs", children are frightened of them because they have no choice to believe otherwise.
Those who CHOSE not to learn are ignorant, and unfortunatly to them they feel more bliss. However, those who are naive do not reject the choice to learn, they are just trapped in a world that does not offer more knowledge to them. Now is that bliss? I think not.

Ignorant people choose to remain ignorantIgnorance is the state of being of the weak minded. Most of the time society, parental influence, type of education (professional/technical or primitive} play of rule in influencing a human being to remain ignorant or to not look for thirst of Knowledge.Voted for by klklkl.
My very close relative who is my Brother's wife is a very ignorant lady. She has no knowledge in Science, politics, art, technical and she does not even know the meaning of cities, country, ocean , etc.
She is ignorant and she is happy to remain in that form since she is just a House wife and takes care of the kids in the home. It is her choice to remain ignorant.
I have never seen her asking for any new information about anything.
She seems to be in Bliss but I feel that deep deep down she knows that she is unhappy.
But ignorant people do not have the courage to come out of that state of mind as they fear what new effects it would cause them in their mental framework.
I personally think, as a Human being he must explore knowledge his entire life as Knowledge is divine. Being ignorant or choosing to stay ignorant is a deadly sin really.
