Should Suicide be Illegal?

Currently in most parts of the United States (if not all) it is illegal to commit suicide... what are your thoughts on the issue?

  • Bah, its pathetic is what it is

so, if suicide is illegal then what do they do with the people who committed it? throw them in jail? nope. the only thing they can do is take away their life insurance. to those who try to commit suicide, they are usually given over to some serious therapy but i doubt they get a criminal record for doing so. but hey, what does a Canadian know about American laws?

We have the right to die for our countries.. and we have the right to live. We are free peoples... how can the government take away our right to choose to die?

NO! It's my right to kill myself if I want and how the hell do you plan to punish the people if they did it right they'd be FUCKEN dead!!! You can'tr do anything; even if it was illegal people, like me, would think about it and many do it anyway. It would be a waste of time and paper!

  • Our Right

Being someone who, at one time was depressed and attempted suicide, I know that if is not criminally wrongful. My eyes have since opened up and I cherish life in every aspect. I was put on medication. That was all. That and I was to meet with a concellor once a month. It is the human right to die, and it is something that is inevitable either way. How could someone possibly be charged for killing themselves. I almost laugh seing the scenero of a trial. Whats gonna happen, they give someone who attempted suicide the death peanelty?

I don't know about this one. I don't think it really matters, I mean if you are really serious about killing yourself, you'll make sure you get the job done thus making the legality of it moot. Now, if for whatever reason you attempt suicide and don't die, then I believe, instead of it being punishable by law, you ought to be committed in a psych ward for a mandatory 60 days or something.

the government can't tell us not to kill ourselves because they personaly don't see us.so who cares if its illegal because whos going to stop us.suicide is death but is it really murder.i mean whoever decides to comitt suicide knows what they are doing,no one made them do it.i think murder is wrong ,but if someone chooses to kill themselves then they are much happier then they were if they were alive.suicide is there choice not like murder.

  • Pah!

Think, what is the affect of breaking this law if your suicide plans. You're going to be dead anyway, not like you'll be ending up in jail is it.

Goverment sucks! They should step into the shoes of other people for a change. Only because their lives are ok. Suicide is a persons right. Anyway, they may just make it worser as the suicidal may think' Well, I best make this a strong sure suicide so I don't end up in jail'.

  • Decisions

Suicide is a choice you have to make. Coming to that conclusion is yours and yours alone. First of all, if you are desperate enought to believe that you need to kill yourself to fulfill your potential, then who is anyone to tell you that it's wrong? Deciding who lives and who dies is a decision best left not in the hand of mortals. We have a habit of killing off good people. What happened to Christ, Martin Luther King, JFK and many other people and entities who stood for good, tolerance and morals? The decision to live and to die is that of the soul which inhabits the body and that is all. It's not mine or yours. It simply is.

  • My opinion

I think that the goverment has no controll what so ever if you die or not. Some people are ment to die, Or maybe they think that they had such a bad life that it might be better if they die. Either though Suicide is Murder your harming yourself Not anyone else.

  • Should accomplices get into trouble?

I think that if you want to die that is up to you. On a different post a person said. “We have the right to die for our countries.. and we have the right to live. We are free peoples... how can the government take away our right to choose to die?” I agree with that. I also think that if you want to die you will do anything. I don’t think that suicide is the answer and I think that it is a pathetic way out, but my question is… should accomplices get into trouble. If you want to die and no one can stop you … than why die alone. Why die some horrific way when someone can help give you peace. If you want to die and you want to die with peace than what if the only way you can do that is if you get help? Would you rather them die peacefully or do you want them to die a horrific painful death? (GANTED you and I don’t want them to die.) I have other veiws that are not stated her but this is just one side to the matter and there is more to suicide and accomplices than mentioned here.

  • No

There should be no reason for us to have a law that suicide is illegal. Why do we even do it if we were brought into this world by meanings of some earthly destiny? No, if you make suicide illegal, then everybodys going to know that the major majority of humans is killing their own body. And if you make it illegal, and you don't know that they killed themselves til after you find a dead body what are you going to do? Call out the holy preist to summon godly powers, resserect him then send him to jail? I think not. Use your wits. If we have half of the government United States says we do, then this question wouldn't even be an issue. The fact that we have a law, is the illegal part. Yes it should not be done, but no if you really wanted to do something don't make it a law if you don't plan on using it, do something about it instead of waiting for drug lords to commit death upon an unsteady act. Augusta

Quit talking and Do something about it. A written sentence on a piece of paper isn't going to prevent death.

The only reason it is not legal is because the insurance companies would have to pay on the insurance policy they were all to eager to sell. Think about it the insurance company is betting you won't die have the stats you won't and your are scared you might and they know it...Twisted World.

  • It's illegal for me, anyways. I have no rights.

Being a member of the armed forces automatically deprives a Soldier(Hoah!), Sailor, Airman, or Marine from ever having any real freedom, Max Security Prisoners have more rights than we do.

Suicide Attempt is punishable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice in which if you survive the attempt, you will be find half-pay for 6 months and assigned 45 days of extra duty, which you will serve even if you end up in a hospital for a week or 2. They wouldn't count the 2 weeks, they get what they want unless you commit or go AWOL.

  • So everyone agrees??

No one thinks it's wrong to commit suicide? . . . I thought most people saw it as a totally immoral and illegal act?? I think it should be your choice. The law does nothing anyway-- MILLIONS of people in the U.S. commit suicide every year. I think that maybe there should be a waiting period law: if you want to commit suicide, you should have to wait a certain amount of time to see if your problem works out, and then if you still want to after that, go ahead. But many people who could have made something of themselves and really contibuted to society kill themselves instantly after something minor that could have ended up okay (I attempted and I'm glad I didn't do it because I am happy with my life now).
