Is commiting suicide selfish? If you hate yourself so much then why should you deserve the easy way out? ...?

  • No, it is not.

It is not selfish. There are many people who say that it is because they do not understand how a person could be so miserable that they could not have the will to live anymore. If you were NEVER happy, even after trying many things.. therapy, socializing, changing your passtimes and hobbies, even drugs.. then perhaps you could understand why people kill themselves. I do not think that it is selfish because although you are doing it to get away from the miseries in your own life, what exactly is there worth living for in the first place?

I’ve heard people say that it is selfish because the one committing suicide does not think of all those people that love them and do not think of how large a loss it will be. But in most cases, there will not be such a great feeling of unhappiness in those who were close to the one who killed themself after some period of time (months, years perhaps). Also, if the ones who loved them did not notice that there was something wrong in the first place, that is even more of a reason that suicide should not be considered selfish. Many times suicide is accompanied by depression – and depression is usually quite obvious. If someone does not notice that there is something wrong, maybe THEY should be considered selfish.

Now, I admit.. there are some times when killing oneself should definitely be considered selfish, but we should not automatically assume it is always that way.

  • Yes

Yes, It is self-centered, pridefully selfish. We owe an allegence to God who thought of us first, loved us first and put us on this earth for good reason. Rather than wallow in self pity, why not pray and ask God the reason for our being. Judas was so proud that he thought himself above repentence; unworthy of forgiveness and chose to commmit suicide. Jesus said it would have been better he were never born. If a son came asking for forgiveness with sincere heart, what parent wouldn’t forgive him. How sad for the parent of a son who didn’t trust in his father or mother’s forgiveness and ultimately waste his life by commiting suicide.

  • In many cases, but not always....

Seperating this from religion here – I don’t think that, in all cases, suicide is completely selfish. When people do it, most often, all they care about is escaping – from whatever torture their life has provided from them. Maybe some of them don’t believe anyone does care about them.

  • Suicide Is Selfish!

    Suicide is selfish!

I have gone through a lot in my life. Sometimes I feel like I just can’t go on. But I care about my Dad, my Mum, my siblings and my friends. Although life is hard I don’t believe that I deserve the easy way out. I think that it would be selfish for me to commit suicide because it would hurt too many people that I love. I really hate myself for mistakes that I have made but I think I deserve to suffer and pay for my mistakes like I am doing now. Even though it would be so simple to just end it all.

  • No

I don’t belive suicide is selfish. The people who force people into the situation where they think themselves useless are selfish.Just a thought: If a person with multiple personalities try to kill themself is it a hostage situation?

  • Unbelievably selfish

It’s very selfish…and stupid. Anyone willing to commit suicide obviously only cares about themselves, and they aren’t thinking about the pain they’ll inflict on family and friends. It also shows just how much of a coward a person really is, being unable to deal with their problems. You’re not helping anyone by killing yourself.

  • Who Are We To JUDGE

How can one judge this topic..? In most peoples eyes suicide is nothing more than a perminate fix a temporary problem. And so within those shoes yes suicide is a selfish thing. This view is shared by a lot of people, typicaly with good lives so they can't normaly take themselves and place themselves into a suicides shoes. Thus it is rather unfair to jump onto suicides for being selfish, exspecialy if you have no idea what they are really going through. From a holly point of view suicide is a SIN and a ticket stright to HELL. This maybe true no one knows for sure. So in their eyes this isn't selfish or just, it is just wrong. Yet what if that persons suicide is what GOD had intended to happen. Would that suicide still be sent to HELL for fallowing GOD's will? RELIGION can not enter into topics like these. I say this not because I am against religion, I say it because most RELIGIOUS people are BLIND. They wish not to see the world from others views, thus setting them BLINDLY into the world. Finally from the point of the suicide. There are normaly two types of suicideies. The first, Their lives are typically envoloped in pain. They have no way out from this personal HELL of their lives. May it be they are beatin, rapped, alone, ect. They want an escape thus they end their lives. To them this is their only way out, this is their SALVATION, if you will. So to them this is just. They don't mean to do it to hurt those around them, if there are people there. The second are mental ill. They have some sort of chemical unbalence within their body that causes shifts in mood, or bouts of depression. These suicidies most of the time don't want to end their lives they just want an emotional valve. A way to let go of inward emotions. So they harm themselves, and in some cases harm them selves so bad that they cannot recover and die from the injury. Thus making them a suicide. Basicaly what I mean to say by showing these view points is, DEATH is DEATH. Weather it be self-caused, accedental, or just the persons time, DEATH is a natural thing. It will happen no matter what. Who are we to JUDGE a suicide? If you care to JUDGE then please by all means JUDGE yourself, for YOU might have had the resources to help that person. Instead you let them end their life. Then chose to come around and JUDGE suicides. If you have ever known anyone to commit, or even try to commit suicide (Even if it is the kid that sits alone at lunch, that you have never talked to) and you still stood by then YOU are the ones who should be JUDGED you had the chance to HELP, and instead you shyed away. So please do not JUDGE that which you are not ADULT enough to stand and face.

  • of course not

Suicide is not selfish. People driven to suicide are not weak, or thoughtless. If you are weighed down, there comes a point when you have to fall, however much you want to stay standing. Would you hold up under torture? I doubt there is anyone on this site with the strength of character to ignore the gut instinct of self preservation.
