Newcomb's paradox, named after its creator, physicist William Newcomb, is one of the most widely debated paradoxes of recent times.
The paradox goes like this:
A highly superior being from another part of the galaxy presents you with two boxes, one open and one closed. In the open box there is a thousand-dollar bill. In the closed box there is either one million dollars or there is nothing. You are to choose between taking both boxes or taking the closed box only. But there's a catch.
The being claims that he is able to predict what any human being will decide to do. If he predicted you would take only the closed box, then he placed a million dollars in it. But if he predicted you would take both boxes, he left the closed box empty. Furthermore, he has run this experiment with 999 people before, and has been right every time.
What do you do?

The "superior being" never said he'd let you keep the money, did he? Besides, he could be lying and there could be something harmful in that closed box. The thousand dollar bill could be covered in something toxic that would kill you. The money could be counterfit. There are a million ways to be decieved! And even if this experiment was legitimate, then why would he be giving you the money? He must have some reasoning behind it, and it's probably more than just the latest alien human survey. So, all in all, I'd have to tell him that I would be the exception to the 999, that I would make my own money, and I'd thank him if he really did mean to give me the money, but I'm just not willing to take the risk of what may come from doing so.

I wouldn't chooseVoted for by christopheshea.
Chosing is the predictable human behaviour, by not chosing either box, the superior being may let you know what was in the closed box anyway, you wouldn't lose, but you wouldn't get anything except the knowledge of what was in the box. But either way, don't play and there's nothing at stake.

I wouldn't choose as wellVoted for by muzicalquest.
I coulda voted on the one above me, but it didn't fit exactly what I wanted to say.
anywho, if the superior being claimed he knew the human's prediction every time or whatever, then, you'd have to assume that he'd know if you were going to refuse taking the box at all along with the other 3 choices.
you either choose the box with the guarenteed 1,000,
take both and either get 1,001,000 , 1,000, or 0
take the closed and get eitehr 1,000,000 or 0
or choose neither.
let's look at it this way: if you have 1,000,000 dollars, chances are you don't care about a measly 1,000. so, we can rule out that taking both boxes at once doesn't give you any real sort of an advantage than any other choice. so, we can get rid of it.
next, we have, choose 1, choose, the other, or choose none.
if you chose none, and the superior being knew that you were going to choose neither, he probably would've avoided you in the first place because he knew you wouldn't play his game. so, because the being chose you, we can assume that he knows you're going to choose a solitary box.
what i dont get is why this being would want to give you money. I would think that the object is to gain money, not to be guarenteed money of different amounts.
what the real question is, is whether or not you see money as more than a tool, but as a sign of power and a boosting of self-esteem.
there is no definite answer to this, because the answer in of itself, is defined by the individual who is asked the question. that, is what I would do.

well this is interesting. when i read that the being would know what i would choose i immediately thought of that movie Village of The Damned. the last scene in the movie is when the teacher is thinking about the bomb he brought into the building to destroy the children/aliens/whatever. these children/aliens can read minds and even have mind control methods. so to keep the children from seeing taht there was a bomb and thwarting the plan, the teacher thinks about a brick wall. this prevents the children, despite their trying, to see what was really in the back of his mind. and it works. while it is just a tactic in a movie, i would attempt to use something similar. i would think about taking the thousand dollar bill. if he knows what move i will make then he has to do some sort of mind reading which would render my thoughts virtually useless to him being as they arent my true intentions.
this may prove useless as there may not even be any money in the closed box. but then again, id get more useage out of an empty box than an illegal thousand dollar bill.

even though my present action should not be able to change the foreknowledge and past action of the alien... in a way it does which is weird... and i'll make the $million =)
