If We Are All Created Equal Why Is There So Much Hate In The World?

Why must there be racists, and homophobs, and sexists? Why, if we are all equal, why do people think lesser of others just because the look different of sound different? Why must we be so afraid of change?

  • Not equal

We all do exist - sure! But we are not equal. We have different phisical qualities (strength, etc) and mental qualities (there is such a thing as a genetic genious).

  • we're not equal

No one is created equal. We are all different, and therefor are not created equally. Some of us have more, some of us have less, some of us have different things. The hatred comes from jealousy, biggatry, and ignorance. It's up to us to put a stop to such things, but if we ever do stop all the hatred in the world, we wouldn't have a reason to remember the lessons we learned. We would forget, and the hatred would start for the next generation.

  • A "Must Have"

Sadly, we need hatred. It wouldn't matter if we all looked the same, sounded the same, or even if we were cloned. There would still be hatred, simply because it's vital. We need to hate. It's a defensive response, a survival tactic to things that frighten us or things we're unsure of. It'll never go away.

  • Fear

Because, as humans we feel fear. and when that fear takes over we have to blame someone. Racism is just an excuse for someone else to say "I want to be the top dog in this world!" if people can't accept one another for what they look like on the outside, God might as well just wipe us all out for I care. If humans can't accept that everyone is different, and that people are immutable, then we all might as well go and have a giant war until everyone is dead.

  • there is hate because...

There is hate because we are afraid of what we are not. If we are not gay, we are afraid of them, except for the few who are not. Some people are not afraid of people different then them, but it is classic human nature to fear what we are not. We always fear the monsters in movies, except for the one kind pretty girl who understands him. This is like the world. Most of us fear those who are different (King Kong, gays, other races, the other gender, etc.) but then there is the one (or more) person who does not fear, but trys to understand, so they can teach others that this is not something to be afraid of but just another person.

  • Hate

when people fear they hate, when they hate they despise, when they despise they attack, when they attack they feel more fear and so it all starts over again. it happens all the time.

  • Is it really hate?

Perhaps if you looked at the other side of the question it might help to answer the one asked here. Why isn't there more hatred in the world?

People, more specifically, humans, fear what they don't understand. Fear breads animosity. Hatred arises as a defensive mechanism. One defends ones dislikes by defining your feelings as hatered. I HATE cooked peas. I HATE it when you do that etc. Do they really mean 'hate' or is that just a mechanism to add fervor to their statement? I think the later.

It amounts to simple ignorance. If these same people would seek to understand what makes the object of their animosity different, the fear would dissapate and the feelings of animosity with them.

Much of the 'hatred' I see in the world today, I believe, is directly attribted to the various religious dogmas that exist. Christians believe homosexuality is a sim against god and so we have those who feel justified in hating them (Homosexuals). There are many examples of this dogma related hatred. In fact the three forms of hatred mentioned in the question above can be shown to stem (at least in some of their forms) from Christian dogma (whether due to improper interpretation of said dogma or not the source is the same.)

  • Who's to say?

Who says were equal? Who says were different? We are all born equally but the actions that we take make us different. People fear the different because of either lack of exposure to it or their insecurities. People don't fear change, they fear the unknown.

Equal in value, but still different. With a threatened sense of self an individual can strengthen their self-identity by demonising others and emphasising the differences.

  • Equality

Man was indeed created equal but that be to only one person and that is himself, we're all equal to oneself and beyond that there is no comparisation for the lenghts that we differ from eachother.

But to deny hatred would be to deny unity, mankind will always hate as it will also love - even though you chose which one you would like to accept your unity to the rest of mankind with by practicing. Denying hate would be to deny one of the few things that make us equal to one and other.

All i know is that is there is little in my mind to be learned from a path of insecurity and predjudice.

Fear and hate, so close together and easy to combine, it's right down in our nature to see it.

Although it would take someone more blissful than myself to acknowledge love and peace as two joint forces. Denying hate would be to deny one of the few things that make us equal to one and other.

All i know is that is there is little in my mind to be learned from a path of insecurity and predjudice.

  • instinct

people don't want to be equal. they want to feel safe, and they can make sure that they personaly aren't the ones being hated by making sure others are hated. by bringing hate on others they are protecting themselves. also it's instinct to reject anyone 'differant', skin colour, etc, it may not be reasonable but it's insecurity, also the instinct you can see it in animals if one of the pack is albino they will be driven away... they bring weakness to the group. people are stupid and weak, mostly. society, indeed. what we have created for ourselves.

  • Survival of the fittest

Like all species of this planet, we come into this world with nothing but a desire to survive. We lack understanding. To hate is to fear for survival. To hate another human being is to be blinded by that fear and forget that the person eats, breathes, bleeds, and has the same desire for survival.

some of us are born in the united states to a middle class family, healthy, and in the arms of loving parents...some of us are born into poverty, severley disfigured at birth and abandoned at 4 months old by both parents.....this poverty kid later in life hears of the middle class born child and becomes jealous...and possibly...........full of hatred...

  • The Mind

one reason is the mind. People must place themselves in the world, and some people do so by looking for the differences in others and then, for some reason, think that because they are "normal" they are "better" than others. its as simply as i can put it

I'm sure there is a more philosophical way of explaining it but in order to keep it simple:

  • A Paradox
    Hello there,

I respectfully disagree with most of the opinions expressed above. By the look of it, the subject seems to be interesting as it has generated very fruitful discussion.

Imho, the question itself has to be challenged both in its subjective pretension and its objective contents.

Firstly, one needs to determine whether we are really 'born' 'equal'. Secondly, what does 'equality' mean anyway. And thirdly, what or how does an evenly equal or egalitarian society has to do with hatred.

As long as the above concepts are not challenged, the grapevine of opinions will go on in a circular manner. Once challenged, and when the cobwebs of our formal education and culture (in this case literary culture, specifically) are brushed aside , then i predict that the question itself will disintegrate, and it will leave behind paradoxical superstructures (or meme's, in a vague manner) of mental constructs.

  • Equal?
Equality is simply a big lie we are not equal however hate love and all the other concepts that fits are simply because of the thing called neuronalmiror or if you want because of how our body's work simply you meet someone that you feel that you like him and this is simply because your body is creating some kind of chemical thing that makes you love this person and it's somehow because you know that you are better then this person because truly we only love the people that we are better then them and that we feel that we can control them and that's why usually the people that you think are different and your first impression about them was bad you be to them a good friend and you love them and that's simply because you fell sorry about him and he makes you feel better about yourself because you are better then him/her.

  • We are never equal
If we were equal I wouldn't know so many people that kill themselves to be accepted. We are NOT equal, and I have realized that most bad people get all the good luck. Im not saying I'm good, but so many of my enemies; cheaters, players, etc, have won something, while I slowly made my way through hell/school. The world is filled with hate because some people are happier than others, or smarter, or richer, or more loved. Its that simple. We're not equal.

  • You are confusing a political theory with objective reality
The idea that we are all created equal is more a political idea (that we should be treated as equal under the law etc.) than a description of reality - I don't think anyone really believes that everyone is literally "equal", in the sense of there being a precise correlation between the attributes of each person with all others. Many, including myself, do believe that everyone should be treated the same under the law and given space to develop their unique, unequal attributes (except where these transgress the bounds of civilised behaviour).

The reason for hatred and violence in the world is probably just human nature, I don't think it will ever go away, but we can try to manage it and minimise its harms (eg. by bombing Iran's nuclear facilities).

    P. S. By asking why we must be "so afraid of change" what do you mean? No one is afraid of change per se, you have to give content to the word "change" for your question to make any sense. There is a big difference between tax reforms and jihad, for example - though both aim for "change"

  • the unfunniest joke ever told:
    ta da.
hate is a fear-monger's tool. it has never failed to deliver the desired effect. it serves to alienate mankind from one another. it creates dissonance and dischord. we are a paranoid nation pitted against unfamiliar and strange races.... they are nothing like us. we are american....not even human anymore.

this is the worst game of Risk ever played.

racism, predjudice- these are deviations that ran rampant for so long, they have become a mutated form of education. we don't bother because we have accepted it as a constant. change.... oh that's coming. it only requires that we step away.
as for laws: why heed them? certain laws have come to mean nothing over the cousre of the last 8 years. rights? we had the last of those taken away within the last 4 years. we are unprotected, we are without boundries.....this is anarchy, but behold!!!!!!, an entire nation stands still.
    constructs? whose?
we are poorly timed punchlines shouted above the din of stale dim-lit dive bars- no one laughs, even if they hear.

hate is real. equality between all mankind at birth is real.
question the constructs we are given to swallow, and consider sliding the pill under the tongue and keeping it there until no one is near....
have the courage to fix this. weakness is not admirable, and will serve to harm what's left of your will.
