Is it possible to look beyond the color of ones skin?

Can we get to a point where the color of our skin is no longer noticed. I don’t mean at first glance. I mean period. I think we can. What do you think?

God Bless Tammy

  • I am invested

I have a child of mixed race. I want her to grow up in a world where her worth is not determined by the color of her parents skin or what color she should be. I try not to notice people based on color. I think others can too.

  • Sure

I already don’t care about a person’s color. It’s just another arbitrary feature a person happens to have. I’m more judgemental towards the way a person presents themselves.

I like to believe that someday the entire world will see race as a non-issue, but that is unlikely. There are too many deep-seeded bigots out there. The only viable solution I see is that eventually all the races intermix to the point where purebloods of any race are a huge minority and eventually non-existant…In which case regional stereotypes will take the place of racial ones

  • here's something i'm probably going to get bitched at for

While I agree that skin color is by no means a measure of ones character, there are those who insist on behaving like negative racial stereotypes, and these deserve to be treated as such. in other words, if you dont want to be treated like a “nigger, cracker, spic, etc.”, then don’t act like a “nigger, cracker, spic, etc.” If you are shoplifting, and you get cought, it is not racism that put you into trouble, it is your own thievery. if you get busted smoking crack, it is not becase the police are bigoted that you are arrested, it is because you are breaking the law. period. so many times i have heard people scream “racism” when their own action get them into trouble.

  • Depends how you read the question...

I don’t believe a person can ignore a person’s skin colour. I mean, usually it’s the first thing you notice when you meet a person. The trick is to not let that be the factor by which you judge a person.

  • Hm...

People shouldn’t be racist. The color of ones skin has nothing to do with them! That just shows a little of their background and family. I am white. I am accepted. I accept everyone of every color. It is so stupid to be racist! Unfortunatly, it is very common. I cannot say if she will be accepted or not. I certainly hope she wil be!

  • judgement

I read somewhere that the first thing that we notice about someone when we meet them is their height, then their race, then their gender.

I think that we will always notice these things about other people, even if its just a way of distinguishing one person from another. But I also think that it is possible for us to stop judging people by the color of their skin. Sadly, I don’t think that it will happen in my lifetime. There are far too many racist people in the world.

  • We should embrace our differences

Maybe it's just me but you can't say that you hope someone doesn't notice them for the colour of their skin. I for one think that is wrong. If you bring a child up that way they'll think there is something wrong with the way they look. We should nootice people for the colour of their skin, that's the problem. Are we suppose to not notice that a person is black? Should we look right through them completely? No! We should embrace the variety of the human form just as we embrace the variety of flowers and animals. We should cherish people for their differences instead of pretending we're all the same. Just because some people are scared of difference, doesn't mean we should all see one colour.

  • Skin Meets the Eye First

The world today seems to pretend to see all races as equall, but that's hardly true. Some people strive too seperate themselves from other races. I've noticed many blacks see themselves above whites. However, there is hardly any severe opression of any race being practiced in today's society. In almost every "black clique" you'll see at least one white person. I think no matter how hard we try though, skin is the first thing that meets the eye and I think your child will inevitably discover there are differences in the average perosnality of a white, black, or hispanic person. He or she may never make a verbal note of this (for fear of being accused of being a racist), but as humans I think we hall have made mental notes of this. I think it's human instinct to stereotype people weather we admit it or not. However, I doubt your child will ever refuse to interact with any particular race. (Sorry if this seemed all of the place.)

  • It was pointed out

I never really noticed, Yeah I could always see the person instead of their skin. It was of no big deal at all until well..I watched Black History on Vh1, then I started noticing black people as..black people. And then mexicans, I started noticing them being mexican when it was pointed out.

Doubt the whole point I said this makes sense, oh well.

  • Colour prejudice

In response to the lady who expressed concerns about people who are prejudiced against people on the sole basis of the colour of their skin, this is prevalent everywhere you go and though I love coloured people and treat them exactly as I do people of my own colour (white)I believe that people need to be re-educated to change this unfortunate bias. Some of the prejudice is based on racial propaganda spread by bigoted people and some of it emanates from lack of knowledge or fear of anyone or anything that is different.Frankly,I find coloured people attractive, though obviously not all of them.I do confess to being attracted to the colour of their skin on occasions.

  • Skin does not matter.

I think that there will be a time where skin color will not matter. For some, it is already that way but for others skin tone is a big issue. Seriously, if someone is to…what’s the word…stuck up to look past the skin color of a person, then they just have weak morals, so to speak.

If you look past the skin color and just see what is on the inside, we are all alike. Think about it. We are all the same on the inside but on the outside, everyone is different. Skin color really should not matter because it isn’t what is on the outside that people need to look at. Meeting people on the internet allows you to become friends with someone without knowing their true skin color. It’s an easy way to see the inside of people before you see the outside.

So yes, I believe in time, a lot of time, that skin color will be disregarded and will then become nothing more than a fragment of the past.

  • yes it is but...

i believe it could be possible but then it would take so much effort on the part of those people who have been raised to think that coloured people should be discriminated.

  • totally possible

i think it is possible, but i also hope that while the world is going for this goal they don't go to far and act like a person doesn't have a different color skin, because the fact is that we all do have different colors of skin, we are all unique. i have always grown up around racism, but i have decided that i'm not going to be like that so i now don't put into my evaluation of someone's character their color, because that is completely unfair. just because a black man walks into a store i'm in wearing all dark colored clothes late at night wouldn't bother me or make me think he was up to no good like it would some other people in the part of kentucky that i live in, but then again i've grown up in a school whose population kinda looks like a bag of m&m's and you learn really quick in a school like that that everyone is or can be bad, not just a certain race.

NO, for we are flawed humans. Only Christ had that ability. It is a wonderful thought but not attainable for mere humans. I just don’t believe it is possible.

If we like someone we won't see any skin colour differences. The distinction and racism only comes up when dislike is there.

  • just pigmentation

It's real stupid -n- ignorant 2 be prejudice b'cus skin tones are just different pigmentations...If a woman is pregnant in the summer -n- is in the sun alot, her baby will come out with a darker pigmentation...If she is pregnant in the winter -n- is not in the sun alot, more than likely her baby will have paler skin...As far as different races go...it's stupid 2 be prejudice of say:black,white,chinese,spanish...etc...B'cus we all originated from one race -n- then broke off into different races and mixed with each other and that's why you have different races, but,we all share a same gene in our dna...making us all related in 1 way or another...

  • Just a comment really...

Ive noticed a lot of fear when people are making their opinions heard, in this subject in particular.

If you believe you are not a rascist then allow people to judge from what you have written, rather than a tacked on 'just to make sure people understand- i'm not a rascist' sort of comment.

Most people in this forum are intelligent enough to understand your views without jumping to conclusions.

In answer to the question, as i was growing up i was never aware of being in a 'multi cultural society' as i just thought people looked different and that was that.

But there are facts to be observed when dealing with the race issue such as more crime etc.

I believe this is more to do with the financial background of the people in question rather than their race. But unfortunately minorities also earn much less on average so this can become a vicous circle.

A handout is not required here, which can often lead to increased friction between the taxpayers and the people being paid benefits. Minorities do not want to be known as lazy and undeserving.

What is required is a 'hand up' which is when minorities are given full opportunities and chances to shine and achieve highly in life. This is the way they can break free of being typecast and being prejudiced against.

  • of course

Yes it is possible to look past another persons skin color.. Why should it matter if your white, black, purple or green? It shouldn't matter at all. Were all people. Adults have to teach their children not to judge people by what they look like. If you grow up with parents who are accepting of other people you most likely will be too. But you have to have an open mind it s not just your parents. Its you too.

  • ?

Of course it is posible, but not now... I mean if we start teaching the masses that only whats inside counts, then people will eventally see past skin and more towards personilaty. The problem is, everyone judges people by there skin color even when they dont notice it. Try looking at your actions to others as if you were reading a book about it, then you will see all your thoughts in a patteren... even if its little you react diffrent to other races, every one dose. think about it... have you ever looked at somone and judge them right away?... of corse you have ...everyone dose... its how we were taught, it makes you envy the blind... they can only judge through personilty... its the only way they see... they feel the thing inside(pesonality) and out (actions) i hope some day we will be able to teach skin color means nothing in the future, but we must start today in any little or big way possible
